To be a bit irked at being called 'Lady'?

I got a text yesterday from somebody I was looking to rent a room from starting with "Hi Lady."

AIBU to be a bit irked by this and to find it a bit rude? She knows my full name, it's on the email I sent her originally and on every text I have sent her!

agree with cakebitch. it's a way of being matey, i don't think it's anything to get angry about. i've noticed 'lovely' being used like that too.

eg. "hi lovely, how are you today?"

Hmm, I used "hey lady" occasionally with friends - I'm not sure why! Confused

anewyear · 29/03/2013 09:04

The young lad, well actually not that young, hes 25ish calls every one 'girl',
'allright girl?' he'll say or 'watcha girl', at 46, Im almost old enough to be his mum!

austenozzy · 29/03/2013 19:43

anewyear - 'almost'? :-)

BumpingFuglies · 29/03/2013 19:45

I think it's really nice actually. I have a friend who calls me this, and I call others "miss", "missis" or "missy".

All depends on context I suppose.

Tigerbomb · 29/03/2013 20:30

we do the lady thing between friends - alternated with the odd lass, wench, binty or missus.

I hate hate hate being called Madam

witchface · 29/03/2013 20:39

Endearments like lass, girl, chuck whatever are great between friends but a bit weird from someone you dont know. Would be a bit Hmm about a prospective landlord calling me lady.

Although to be fair round here its used when someone is a spoilt madam so maybe my feelings are coloured by this.

I think it is a bit of banter .... Especially as you think both you and she are ' quirky '. Maybe it's a bit of friendly bonding ?

GetOeuf · 30/03/2013 17:45

It sounds like a toddler - they go through phases of addressing people directly as 'man' or 'lady'

I suspect she was trying for the appellation equivalent to 'Madam' and her English isn't that good.

Ooh, I really don't like Wifie Zukie.
It makes me sound so old.
Or even worse Wee Wifie.

Latara · 30/03/2013 18:05

I had a patient with dementia (aged 90) who would shout 'oh laydee, come here lady, help me lady' then when i went to her she would start saying 'hey miss, miss, miss...!!' bless her.

Latara · 30/03/2013 18:08

I have heard some colleagues say 'hey lady' to each other but it is a bit weird to start a text to a stranger like that. So YABU.
