... or is this scummy?

My two DSs (13 and 11) are responsible for putting their dirty clothes in the laundry basket, and responsible for putting their clean clothes away. We have a looooot of washing (outdoor life, lots of mud, and "boy trouser freshness issues" with the younger one) and it's hard to get it all dry at the best of times.

I have told them and told them to only put clothes in the wash that are actually dirty, or sweaty or whatever. (Pants and socks are definitely changed daily, no question!)

Despite these reminders, lately I have been finding a lot of clothes in the basket that are not dirty or smelly or anything - usually big cotton hoodies that I reckon have been worn once at most. AIBU to quietly put them back on the "clean" pile without actually washing them?

Not scummy!

YouTheCat · 26/03/2013 09:43

Go for it. They're a bugger to dry.

HeySoulSister · 26/03/2013 09:43

God no, I do this too op!!

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 26/03/2013 09:44

Just be grateful that they put anything in the wash and not just in a steaming stinky pile in their bedroom floor

Freddiemisagreatshag · 26/03/2013 09:44

Absolutely not scummy. Essential.

I presume these things have been lifted from the Floordrobe?

ScarletLady02 · 26/03/2013 09:46

Not scummy at all....I get a bit "wash-basket happy" sometimes and as I'm putting stuff in the machine I realise it doesn't actually need washing. I always do the "sniff" test Grin

HerrenaHarridan · 26/03/2013 09:49

Yanbu.

When I was a disgusting teenager I would regularly put stuff to wash that had only been tried on or had been clean washing id never bothered to put away.
When forced to tidy my room I would bin bag the anything washable and dump it on the kitchen floor Blush

almostanotherday · 26/03/2013 09:51

The sniff test works in this house too. My DD like to change outfits during the day so some items on/in the floordrobe have only been worn for half hour and I'm not using up washing machine space on them.

ScarletLady02 · 26/03/2013 09:52

It's especially hard at the moment as it's so cold in my house and things take about 3 or 4 DAYS to dry!

PickledInAPearTree · 26/03/2013 10:04

Yeah I used to put clean things in if I couldn't be bothered to put them away!

Put them back!

googietheegg · 26/03/2013 10:06

Not scummy! I hang hoodies outside for an hour or two (and coats)to get some fresh air then put them back in the wardrobe.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 26/03/2013 10:06

Oh god. I used to shove clean clothes in the washing basket too. Dreading karma biting me on the bum when my toddlers grow up.

I do the sniff test too, on tshirts/jumpers my dp has tried on or worn only briefly Hmm

Crinkle77 · 26/03/2013 11:53

YANBU. They will never know. My mum always used to moan about us putting stuff in the wash that had only been worn for a few hours. Basically we were too lazy to put them back in the wardrobe.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 26/03/2013 11:56

I used to do this - drove my poor mum bonkers.

She used to do the washng/ironing and then leave it in our rooms for us to put away and if I couldn't be bothered it would just go back in the dirty washing bin.

My poor mum, what a cow I was - would go bloody mad if my DS did that to me!!!

BuntyCollocks · 26/03/2013 11:58

YANBU. my husband still does this, with his and the small boy's things. Irksome is somewhat of an understatement. I also put his stuff back.

badtasteflump · 26/03/2013 12:02

No I do that too - my eldest seems to dump his jeans in the wash every time he wears them Confused

WhereYouLeftIt · 26/03/2013 12:41

" AIBU to quietly put them back on the "clean" pile without actually washing them?"
Well, YANBU to not wash them, but YABU to do it quietly. I was very vocal to DS about making unnecessary work for me!

idiuntno57 · 26/03/2013 12:44

in the olden days when washing not so easy it was completely normal just to hang up clothes to freshen/wipe off stains. I think the easy availability of washing/drying in modern life means people don't think about whether something really needs cleaning or not.

YANBU not at all. In fact you are lengthening the life of your clothes and washing machine whilst helping the environment. You probably deserve a big shiney badge saying SUPERMUM Grin

idiuntno57 · 26/03/2013 12:45

Or perhaps DOMESTIC GODDESS AND ALL ROUND GOOD PERSON but that would mean a really big badge

ooer · 26/03/2013 20:56

haha idiunt to badge.

You are right I should be telling them Whereyouleftit - sometimes I just get sick of the sound of my own voice ...

Thanks everybody for the replies. Thanks fresh washing fragrance ...

I used to get freshly laundered and ironed clothes put back in the washing basket!

mum47 · 26/03/2013 21:06

Mine are the same age and I get this too. I put their clean clothes on their chairs in their rooms for THEM TO PUT AWAY, which they don't, so they rummage through the clean stuff which then spills over onto the dirty stuff which is in their laundry baskets/on the floor so I have no idea which is which - aaargh, I am sick of the sound of my own voice nagging them about this!

Cherriesarelovely · 26/03/2013 21:06

No Yanbu at all. I think my Dd does this too. Aaaarrrrgghhhh!!!!

ChippingInIsEggceptional · 26/03/2013 21:19

YANBU not to rewash them, YABU to just put them back - another one saying you need to tell them you aren't stupid, you know they've not been worn/be barely worn and you are not rewashing clean clothing.

However, do their drawers/wardrobes need clearing out so that it's easier to put them away?? If they are overfull it's a big hassle putting clothes away and I can see why they end up back in the wash.

Orangerevel · 27/03/2013 08:04

I do this all the time. Sometimes my teenagers will wear a hoody for an afternoon and out it in the wash as they can't be bothered to put it away.
