to ask neighbour to pay

Ok so, neighbour came round with her 5 year old, my 5 year old was in front room, they say together while I went in kitchen with neighbour to make coffee. Next thing her child has picked up my kindle fire (Christmas present) and dropped it, it still works but all glad is cracked, badly.
Neighbour apologised,I minimised, as I do,dp phones and goes mad saying neighbour must pay for repair.
It was an accident,I never said at the time she should pay,AIBU to now ask her to pay for repair?

It shouldn't have been where 2 x five year olds could get it.

Amazon will probably replace for free if you ask them nicely.

I'm afraid if you're going to leave two five year olds on their own in the front room, you need to ensure anything you'd mind being broken is moved out of the way.

If my five year old neice comes to stay, I see it as my responsibility to keep anything breakable out of her way.

I agree. You left it there. Why is it her responsibility? Although a 5 yr old should know better - sometimes they are curious. Our neighbours daughter (6) broke my ds's android. It's the way she is, into everything. It now gets put away when she comes round, but I wouldn't have dreamed of asking her mum to pay for it.

She came round unannounced, my ds was watching tv do I never even thought of searching for breakages, it was out off the way, but not unreachable.

I would have offered to replace it if I was the visitor and my five year old had dropped and cracked the screen. If you had minimised it, I would have insisted.

You shouldn't have left it out. Different if he went into a cupboard and got
It out. But you should have out expensive things out of reach.

I think the neighbour should have offered to atleast pay half! It will be awkward now if you go and ask, but i don't think you were BU leaving it with dc alone in a room, they are 5 not 1!! As mentioned maybe try to ask amazon, have you got any insurance on it, they might sort it for you?

I would have offered to pay for areplacement if my chidl had broken it. However as you didnt ask her to pay for it at the time you can't now. If your DH wants her to pay he can ask her.

Have you tried speaking to Amazon is it still in warranty? Do you have contents insurance it would be covered?

Someones child breaks something and the parent should not take any responsibility for it because it was "within reach"

My windows are in reach of children, if someones child broke them would that be my fault??

Honestly, no one would take any responsibility if their child broke an expensive item?

amazon are replacing it!! They don't techinically have to, as accidents aren't covered, but as a one off they said they would.

as a side note, had the roles been reversed, I would have insisted on paying, or at least going halves, my child my responsibility?

If I was your neighbour I would insist that I was paying for the damage.

I don't however think you should broach the subject. If your neighbour has not enough integrity to pay for the damage then you'll need to just chalk this down to experience.

I would absolutely insist on replacing this, of course it was an accident but why should the OP pay? In the OP's place I would also have minimised though, hoping that the neighbour would be reasonable. Glad amazon are being so good!

That's good customer services from Amazon, I'm impressed.

I ordered something from them recently and when the package turned up it was in a plastic bag with an apology from the royal mail because the package had been damaged. It was also completely empty. Amazon just sent out a replacement and said they'd claim from Royal Mail. I was impressed it was so hassle free
