Yanbu

I saw a child from my nephews pre school climb into his mums car with no seat a few weeks back.

I don't understand why people are willing to risk their child's safety for the sake of buying (and using correctly) a car seat

PurpleStorm · 24/03/2013 16:36

YANBU. It's dangerous and illegal.

I was once driving along behind a car in a 40mph zone, when a child appeared out of the sunroof. Got his head and upper body out, and then stayed there for a while before getting back into the car. That was pretty alarming to watch.

SaveWaterDrinkMalibu · 24/03/2013 16:39

Was in Tesco car park earlier and saw a woman 'dump' her tiny baby in a maxi cosi pebble on the front seat so baby was facing her seat. Then she got in and drive off

Was absolutely shocked

If its illegal why arent they caught/reported? take car number next time. please.

it bloody annoys me.But I guess their excuse would be they dont wear seatbelts on a bus or train!

and dont get me started on the smoking/on the phone/loud ''music'' in the car with DCs in there.

furbaby · 24/03/2013 18:37

Saw these idiots earlier , was walking ddog and walked past a car with a child no older then 2 sat crossed legged in middle of back seat , no belt or child seat . Guy got in and just drove off . I was stunned , even ddog took a second look . Bloody idiot

marjproops · 24/03/2013 18:42

furbabyeven dog took second look Grin

but seriously, if i see it i make note of car reg and report them. dont know if anything actually gets done but if more people do it maybe something WILL be done.

Our DF does this. She's very anti car but needs to use one sometimes. She told me she'd got 'fed up' with storing the 'massive' 2nd stage car seat we'd given her and that her 3yo was ready for a booster seat. One of the backless ones you use with an adult seat belt. Hmm

I told her she was talking rubbish and was putting his life at risk. She's not called since then. (nearly 2 weeks ago.) She's a great mum in every other way possible and I just can't understand how weird and crap she's being about this.

MajaBiene · 24/03/2013 19:12

Children should be strapped in and in appropriate seats, and I particularly hate babies turned forward facing etc, but Betsey I think you are being a bit hysterical about a 3 year old on a booster seat. I can't imagine the safety difference between a booster seat and a high backed booster is significant at all.

Sirzy · 24/03/2013 19:18

high backed boosters provide some side impact support which you don't get with a booster cushion. At 3 a child should ideally still be in a 5 point harness but should certainly still be in a high backed booster

MrsExcited · 24/03/2013 19:19

I was shocked when putside my local tesco a woman pulled up in a 2 seater sports car and another lady got in the passeger seat and her toddler got in the footwell.

If i could have read her number plate i would have reported it to non emergency number for the police

MajaBiene · 24/03/2013 19:26

Sure Sirzy, ideally. But at 3, if they child weighs 15kg, the difference in safety is likely to be very small. Certainly not enough to be nasty to a "great mum" about.

marjproops · 24/03/2013 19:28

and these are the same people who, if darling child gets so much as a scratch at school theyre down the headteachers office having a rant at how their darlings are treated badle and neglected.at school.

The only traffic laws that are actually enforced are parking and speeding. Because they generate cash.

There appears to be very little interest in safety, despite all the programmes you see on the TV. Sad

There seems to be very little done about the number of drivers with no license, no insurance or tax, texting while driving, talking on the phone, using lap tops, driving on pavements, driving on the wrong side of the road, it all goes on every single day, with no consequences.

I watched 2 vehicles drive straight through a red light, 1 police officer and 2 CSOs standing about 3 feet away, none of them even blinked.

JoyceDivision · 24/03/2013 19:41

It's really common round by us, frequently see kids in cards satinfront, no seatbelts, or bobbing around on the backseat, norestraints / car seats being used. Polce do absolutely nothing.

Although seeing a car pull up fora nearby high school, 5 kids got out of the car then two got out of the boot

that was a joy to watch.

NellyTheElephant · 24/03/2013 20:11

Generally I agree with you, there seems no reason not to have them properly strapped in, on the other hand there are times when i have a houseful of the cousins and i can't help harking back to my childhood when about 10 children would be stuffed into one car somehow or another and we all spent long journeys in the boot with sleeping bags! No I don't do this with my children but also I try not to get too hysterical about, the odd short journey with the wrong stage car seat. Legally a 3 yr old can sit in the back with no car seat if two other car seats are fitted meaning that the is no room for a third. We did have to do this occasionally as I couldn't fit 3 car seats in my car. Not ideal, but it slightly puts the worry about a 3 yr old on a basic booster into perspective. My current 3 yr old has a high backed booster fitted in my car, but in Dh's car just a small booster. With 3 children close in age the seat question is difficult. They can't all fit with big booster seats so yes I think eldest went onto small booster / in the middle with no booster sooner than was perhaps ideal.

TheRealFellatio · 24/03/2013 20:25

You should try living where I live, in the middle east. Your head would explode on day 1.

I counted six children from about 2 to 10 in the back of one car the other day - not a car seat in sight. Mind you, there never is. Unless it's a western expat driving. Small babies go on mum's lap on the front seat, toddlers and bigger children get to do what they want, including climbing around, hanging out of the windows and standing through the sun roof. And once you get to about 14 you can drive yourself around, even though it's completely illegal. Hmm

I've seen babies on father's laps, while he is driving at 90mph on the motorway and tailgating the car in front. All of this is completely normal. Shock

marjproops · 24/03/2013 20:30

I used to live and work in Europe and you'd see entire families on a moped! no halmets.

yy its worse overseas, kids hanging out of windows but yes Ive seen police nearby not blinking an eyelid as these . drive by doing everything bUT driving!

Meglet · 24/03/2013 20:36

yanbu. AFAIK you can report it if you get the reg number.

I'm shocked at how often I notice parents doing it.

mamasmissionimpossible · 24/03/2013 20:37

I have been to the middle east several times and have also witnessed several dc unstrapped in the back and front of cars, including babies and toddlers on mums lap in the front :(. I don't think they enforce any car seat laws there. It will be a sad day if those families get involved in a road accident :(

Mind you, there are few families here in the UK who do not strap their kids in car seats. I really want to say something, but am afraid I may get a mouthful, that it is none of my business.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 24/03/2013 20:38

I read somewhere reliable (Which, perhaps) that they were thinking of starting a campaign against those non-backed booster seats. There was one of those crash test video things and it showed the difference in impact between the dummy in the high backed seat and with the basic booster. And then between the impact on the dummy of a crap high backed seat and a good one; both were quite shocking.

We were in a bus crash a few years ago; both my DCs were on the seat in front of me when the bus did an emergency stop at a pretty slow speed - I watched them both fly though the air, hit the window in front and slide to its bottom and I can tell you it was awful. No serious injuries, just lots of bitten lips and big chin bruises, thank God. Still, I remember that most times I strap them in.

Re. my friend. We have a frank relationship. She'll come around. And I am prone to hysteria. Grin

Wincher · 24/03/2013 21:32

YANBU. I was getting cross in Sainsbury's car park, trekking past all the parent and child spaces with my toddler, seeing all the cars pulling in and out of the spaces with no children in. Seriously, I counted 6 cars arriving or leaving the p and c spaces with no kids. Then finally one pulled in and the doors opened... a woman got out of the back seat with a baby on her lap, and then a toddler and older child climbed out from next to her, with not a car seat jn sight. I can't believe people are happy to risk their children's safety like that.
