Birthday/Valentines/Congratulations/Mothers Day etc cards.

Just visited a friend, her birthday was 2 weeks ago and she still had the cards up. I generally take mine down after a week.

I suppose Christmas cards can be the exception.

On a string in our house and they generally stay up until the string is needed for the next cards.

ShannonNoah · 21/03/2013 14:45

See I really couldn't keep my Christmas cards up until March.

I love Christmas, and always feel slightly down when it's over. I think still seeing the cards 3 months later I'd feel sad that Christmas was 9 months away.

YABU for being such an exact arbiter of taste so far as cards are concerned. I know you say it doesn't matter but if that's the case, why raise the topic?

As it happens, cards tend to come down a week or so after the event here but for all that I still have, on my desk, the particularly lovely Mother's Day card my two grown-up sons gave me.

Nagoo · 21/03/2013 14:48

I take them down after exactly a week and DH thinks I am mean and uncaring :o

The home made cards go in a scrapbook of things the DC have made :)

BearWithBearWith · 21/03/2013 14:49

People can spend a small fortune on cards nowerdays (fancy card&stamp) and put a lot of thought into the type of card/writing inside so to have them up for only a week seems a shame.

flossy101 · 21/03/2013 14:52

I kept my "congratulations on new baby" cards up for months weeks. They were all so pretty and I got loads so felt massively popular whenever we had visitors admiring all my cards GrinGrin

Still18atheart · 21/03/2013 14:56

YABU my birthday is middle of November and I keep my bday cards up till Christmas. I think I like to prolong my birthday for as long as possble

ShannonNoah · 21/03/2013 14:58

I know you say it doesn't matter but if that's the case, why raise the topic?

Because it's a public forum, and it's fun to discuss and see how others do things differently.

There is no right or wrong here. I just assumed that most people probably kept cards up for about a week, but going by the majority I was wrong.

I understand this is AIBU but please stop trying to get argument out of me because it just won't happen.

Mine stay up till dp moves them

We do still have one piece of tinsel hanging round a picture from christmas tho - dp tried moving it last month but the wall looked strange without it.

People have stopped mentioning it when they visit now Blush

DragonMamma · 21/03/2013 15:07

Mine stay up for the day of the event and then the follow day. They then get binned. Can't be doing with a load of cards all over the place.

The DC's stay up a few days but never a whole week

Startail · 21/03/2013 15:07

They live pegged on a string and stay up until next event. Quite probable we'll end up with best ones from all of our birthdays still up all year as no one any longer has full class parties and gets loads.

MackerelOfFact · 21/03/2013 15:08

I keep mine up for months if they're pretty. Blush They come down sooner if they're horrible though.

If it's an occasionless notecard though, it might remain for years. (I have a LOT of shelves).

Startail · 21/03/2013 15:10

DDs splendid Peacock is staying in my room for the foreseeable future as do really good butterflies.

Pascha · 21/03/2013 15:10

In my house the cards go: Open, Read, Recycle. They don't generally touch any surface between the doormat and the recycle bin Blush. Kids ones are excepted from this of course, I've no wish for an upset toddler.

fluffyraggies · 21/03/2013 15:14

Well i'm really glad you started this thread OP, because this year i'm feeling a bit fragile for various reasons and have kept my Mother's Day cards up longer than the usual week. To cheer me up.

I was thinking this morning maybe it was a bit weird to do this, and maybe i should take them down, but now i know i'm not alone i'm going to leave them up! So Cheers Grin

Kendodd · 21/03/2013 15:16

Ours stay up about a month. A friend of mine didn't take her Christmas tree down until April once Shock

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/03/2013 15:17

I have just badgered DH to take down his birthday cards. His birthday is January 1st. Can we all agree that's too long, please?!

I think a week is a bit steep, though.

SelfconfessedSpoonyFucker · 21/03/2013 15:17

Mine stay up until I have other ones to replace them... or if I particularly like them e.g. hand drawn by DS they stay up even longer. I like looking at them and we have a thingy from ikea to stick them in.

What is with the arbitrary rules?

ShannonNoah · 21/03/2013 15:17

Good for you Fluffy Smile

Hope you start to feel better soon.

ajandjjmum · 21/03/2013 15:18

Ours are often up for a month after the occasion!

treaclesoda · 21/03/2013 15:19

Its a one week rule in my house too, I'm with the OP Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/03/2013 15:22

Shannon - my cards stay up longer than a week because I am a slattern domestically challenged. But at least this thread is making me think about taking down the Mothers' Day cards! Grin

Aspiemum2 · 21/03/2013 15:23

Mine stay up until I remember/can be bothered to take them down. The strings stays up all the time. I'm lazy

ShannonNoah · 21/03/2013 15:26

"domestically challenged" haha I like that Grin

MrsHoarder · 21/03/2013 15:28

Ours stay up until the next occasion. Escept Christmas when they come down on the 12th night. So wedding anniversary cards are up for 4-6 weeks until Mothering Sunday, DH's cards are up until my birthday, my birthday cards are up until they get squeezed out by Christmas cards...

Although I think we'll need a new rule for DS, its 4 months from his birthday to DH's.
