Why are people so into soaps? obsessed in some cases.

Like seriously into them. I hear conversations about the characters as if they ae real! A colleague saying "so and so is a bastard.Bianca is well rid". Haha I mean who cares? Then you get the people who actually BUY the soap mags to read about these pretend people!

My cousin's social life revolves around her not missing her soaps.I don't see her often now.

Wouldn't it just be better to watch reality shows once in awhile? Soaps take about 3/4 evenings out of your time. It's rubbish!

Apologies for any spelling mistakes. On phone and no spellchecker

It's like saying "Why do people bother going on Mumsnet?" MN is soap-like most of the time!

Corrie isn't all doom and gloom, but it is much more so than it used to be. You still get the odd flash of brilliant humour, mostly from the older characters

My favourite quip of recent years was when Ken was all angst ridden convinced his life had all been a waste and hadn't shaved for a few days. Then Blanche asked him 'how long are you going to sit there like a demented Kenny Rodgers?'

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/03/2013 20:17

My favourite recent bit was Roy and Hayley when Hayley was doing her dance competitions and singing in the cafe

Hayley "Jambalaya, Crawfish pie.."
Roy "Bacon Sandwich?"

Perfect comic timing.

RIP Blanche.

Yes, her and Fred Elliot were my favourite characters.

I was quite touched by Stella's mum performance on Wednesday night. So far I thought she was just a 2-d archytype of the bossy, money grubbing older woman and a waste of a fantastic actress in Sue Johnstone, but her ruminations by Stella's bedside really moved me.

LadyBeagleEyes · 21/03/2013 21:14

My favourites were the ones in the old days, Stan and Hilda, and more recently Jack and Vera.
Both who could make you laugh at cry for them.

ComposHat · 21/03/2013 21:18

Yes, wonderful Jack and Vera, just the way Jack would study a racing paper and then fill in bookies slips gurning. His death was very sad too, when Tyrone called him Dad.

I only dimly remember Hilda as I started watching in the mid 80s as a nipper. My first memory was Brian kidnapping Nicky as he was convinced Sarah Lou wasn't his. Gail had been knocking off another bloke and I am hoping someone will bring this up when she gets all high and mighty with Kylie.

They always seem to have great child actors too. Ty, Chesney and David were all brilliant as kids.

I am getting on in years and gave up all the soaps a few years ago.Corrie was the last to go-during that ridiculous John/Fizz story and EE was first-so far back I cant remember.I stuck with Emmerdale for a while but I couldn't be bothered with it eventually.
I loved The Bill and I really like the crime series-my favourites being Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes and New Tricks.

thegreylady · 21/03/2013 22:50

I remember Ena Sharples,Minnie and Martha,Albert Tatlock et al...those were the days.

shesariver · 21/03/2013 23:03

I miss (the character Grin) Blanche.

I dont get why some people get so snobby about soaps, why does it matter what other people like on TV? It would be a very odd world indeed if we all liked the same things to watch in our spare time!

ComposHat · 21/03/2013 23:11

I figure that if Larry Olivier was a fan of the acting in Corrie (and desperate for a cameo role) and Ian McKellen has appeared in it, then no one has got the right to be sniffy about it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/03/2013 23:12

Yes, I thought Sue Johnston was great on Weds too. I really wasn't sure about Stella and family for a long time, but think the three women have got the makings of a great family now (assuming Stella survives). Pity Leanne comes into the equation though.

ComposHat · 21/03/2013 23:17

Both who could make you laugh at cry for them.

Light and shade, the genius of Corrie.
