to not be bothered to change email address

Dh is on a money-saving purge. Discussing switching from Sky to Virgin Media for TV/broadband/phone etc..
It's a better deal really, BUT it means changing my email address. How much of a faff will this be? What about all those sites where your email address acts as your username? Could I just change them on a needs much basis as I go along or have I got to trawl all through everything and tell them in advance?
Can I be arsed?

HELP!!!!!

My Dad is doing this the other way around clam. Grin He said he can't keep his Virgin email address but I didn't believe him. Blush

He's going with it and using as an excuse to have a clearout of his email contacts but he's worried that he will lose stuff on Virgin.

Shutupanddrive · 18/03/2013 18:18

You can have more than one email address though. So keep your old one and just use the new one for what you need to?

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2013 18:19

Well Dad seems to think he won't be allowed to keep the old one Shut.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 18/03/2013 18:21

I've had both BT and Sky email addresses, and both addresses still work... It's been a good 10 years since I had a BT account, too.

YoU might have reduced inbox space, but I'd be surprised if you lose it completely.

Indith · 18/03/2013 18:22

Once you've done it though get yourself a gmail address or other web based one so you never have to to it again!

Shutupanddrive · 18/03/2013 18:22

I've got two, but with different suppliers so maybe not relevant in this case. Errr pass then, sorry!

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2013 18:23

I've no idea Shut. i can't understan why he can't keep his Virgin e-mail if that is the case.

Sky is changing to Yahoo in April just to complicate things...

Maggie111 · 18/03/2013 18:26

Yes I also recommend making the change to Gmail or Outlook so you can switch providers with no fuss next time!

diamondee · 18/03/2013 18:26

I still have a blueyonder account Blush....

TooYappy · 18/03/2013 18:29

You can incorporate all your emails and contacts into which ever new one you go with. I done it changing from BT to Virgin, I haven't done it since but still have my virgin email account 3 years later as well as new BT one and a Sky one, I don't use the Sky one.

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2013 18:30

The transfer is being done on 25/3. I really feel for Dad, he's in his 70s and not v computer savvy. Sad

chris481 · 18/03/2013 19:59

Change to gmail, and set up your gmail account to automatically collect emails sent to your old address. I still receive emails sent to an ISP email address of a ISP I left more than 10 years ago.

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2013 20:15

That's interesting chris. I will mention that to Dad.

soontobeburns · 18/03/2013 20:17

I still have my o2 email from a phone contract and left o2 3 years ago.
Should be okay to keep both.

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2013 20:22

I may have to go round to Dad's and read the blurb. I am wondering if this is a new thing to make it a PITA to swap providers?

WMittens · 18/03/2013 20:34

I had no idea there were people not using Hotmail/Gmail et al. I've got two active Gmail and one Hotmail account (and a further two historic Hotmail accounts that have probably been closed now as I haven't used them in years). I've been with 3 or 4 different ISPs and have never used their email accounts.

clam · 18/03/2013 22:12

OK, so changing to gmail would mean I still get Sky emails. But what about all the companies/organisations that have my Sky address listed. Does that matter if I've changed? Trying to think of an example but can't.

Oh, I've no idea why people use anything else when gmail and hotmail exist.
