Recently a friend of mine organised a 'charity dinner'. It was to be held at her family restaurant and cost was £40 per head. The price seemed high but dh and I paid, assuming a good chunk was going to the charity. The restaurant was an Indian and we were given three drinks each as part of the price, as well as a buffet and the restaurant was full with guests. However, my friend has since mentioned that just £4 per ticket was being given to charity?! So £36 per head goes to the family restaurant.

Aibu to feel pissed off? It was on a weekday, so not as if the restaurant would have been full normally, plus I see they do an all you can eat buffet for £15ph normally. As she is/was a friend I didn't feel the need to check up on how much of the ticket price was going to charity before I paid, I really feel it was a con though and a money spinner for the family business Sad

I think you should double check that the person who told you that only £4 went to charity had their facts right. However, if they are correct it is appalling and you have every right to be annoyed.

It's definitely correct, my 'friend' mentioned after the event that her dad would be donating £4 from the ticket price to the charity.

I'll definitely not eat there again, the food wasn't even great, m&s do a better curry.

I expected at least half the ticket price to go to charity.

YANBU!! Do you know which charity the money was being donated to? I might be tempted to send a letter informing them of the actual goodwill that was wished, not the measly sum that got there in the end!!!

Dreadful!

I might be tempted to put up a 2 star review on Trip Advisor - nothing to do with the charity dinner, just saying what an awful disgusting meal you had there one time.... Hmm

BeaWheesht · 18/03/2013 17:56

I would challenge her on it . That's disgraceful.

WaterfallsOver · 18/03/2013 17:58

That's a good idea Maggie! I know the charity, it's a national one. Unfortunately it was an 'informal' event and as the charity would know nothing of the specifics I doubt they would be able to do anything, they didn't officially sponsor the event iyswim.

Tripadvisor is a great idea though ;)

Yep I'd be pissed off too. £4 is ridiculous to be donating from that price.

theoriginalandbestrookie · 18/03/2013 18:02

YABU that's awful.

Reminds me of a story going round our school . End of term collection for the teacher, one set of parents suggest that vouchers are bought for the restaurant that they own. It's a high end v.expensive restaurant so not easily affordable on a teachers salary.

Other parents went along with it on the basis that teacher would get preferential treatment when they went to the restaurant. This turned out not to be the case.

I'd tell as many people as possible - it's hard to build good trade on the back of stories like this. Also put a 100% accurate review on Trip advisor and mention the cost and how much went to charity - or if that makes you too easily identifiable just say how you can get better from M&S.

I have often wondered if this is legal actually. I would love to find out. DDs dancing school does the same. The tickets say In aid of x charity, but the school make about 50k and come round the audience and charge parents (dress rehearsal) to give to the charity. As far as I know they don't cough up at all.

The cheeky cow! Some people have the hide of an asbestos lined rhino's arse.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 18/03/2013 21:02

That's disgusting! If its true then I would totally find a way to shame them. Go to the local paper or something. Takes the piss.
