To get a new fitted kitchen when my current one is only 4 years old?

Hi, 4 years ago we had a new kitchen fitted. It was desperately needed. However, there was a lot of stuff going on and I was distracted with a seriously ill child, a terminally ill mother and other stuff. The kitchen was bodged and my dh made a lot of poor choices - in taste, practicality and because he never cooks. The kitchen is so difficult to use and dark, the baseboards fall off, the lights are rubbish. The pull out cupboards pull right out, as in smashing onto the floor. I would love to redo it - both in appearance and function, and I have money as I inherited some which just sits in the bank. But the kitchen is only 4 years old. Should I just get it repaired and not be so profligate?

YANBU - it sounds hideous!

If you have the money and don't need it for anything else, then go for it. A functional, well-planned kitchen is a joy and just makes life so much easier.

Buy the new kitchen you want if you can afford it. You know it makes sense!

fluckered · 17/03/2013 17:32

no offence OP but these aibus when the decision is based on whether you can afford it or not are kinda pointless.

so to answer your op, your money your decision. good luck with it.

spanky2 · 17/03/2013 17:33

Why not if you can afford to? It doesn't sound very safe . You sound like you have had a crappy time you need a treat . A fab kitchen would be practical as it would add to the value of your house .

AnnieLobeseder · 17/03/2013 17:36

If your kitchen is crap and you can afford to replace it, do so. How long you've had it is irrelevant. You can always freecycle the old kitchen, so someone else would also get a new kitchen out of the deal.

DrGoogleWillSeeYouNow · 17/03/2013 18:06

If you can afford it, which you can, then YANBU. Get a new kitchen and enjoy it.

scottishmummy · 17/03/2013 18:14

If you can afford it,change it

thezebrawearspurple · 17/03/2013 18:15

yanbu, that's what money is for.

RainbowsFriend · 17/03/2013 18:37

If a kitchen doesn't work, and is falling to pieces, then regardless of how old it is - it needs replacing!

My PIL still have their 1970s kitchen. Cupboards have been freshly painted and a new worktop a couple of times - but it works and actually looks great and classy. They wont replace it until it becomes like yours sounds.

Replace it. Especially if you have the money in the bank to do it.

DublinMammy · 17/03/2013 18:41

Definitely replace it, a well-planned kitchen is a joy, a botch job is a pain in the arse....

Parsnipcake · 17/03/2013 18:52

Thankyou everyone. Reading all the replies back it does seem an obvious thing to do - I guess it's just the double guilt of it not being 'my' money as I inherited it, and the newness of the kitchen, but on the other hand if I had not been nursing my mum, the kitchen would have been much better in the first place. At least I know how I don't want it!

Don't feel guilty and get a new kitchen. Can you donate the kitchen to a charity shop or so?

Whatever it cost to fit the existing kitchen is already spent and is irrelevant in any decision from now in - what accountants call a "sunk" cost. If you can afford a new one, why not?
