Panicking about earring back

Sorry I know this isn't an AIBU, but wanted a quick reply as panicking and know its busier here

I was just putting 5m/o DD back to bed, which involves leaving her to wriggle for a bit while just outside the room, then going in and comforting her if she cries. After 3 times of this, I spotted the front of my earring in her cot. I got it straight out but I couldn't find the back anywhere. DD seems fine, and I didn't hear her choke, but I'm really panicking she might have swallowed it if they both fell out at the same time.

What would happen if she has swallowed it? Is there any signs to look out for?

Also would she have been able to swallow something of this size without choking? she's never had solids before.

I really doubt they've fallen out at the same time. I reckon the back has dropped out earlier and you leaning over your baby has caused the front to fall out.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/03/2013 00:29

Definitely would be able to swallow it. What kind was it? One of those plastic rounded one or a sharp metal one?

Her windpipe will be about the size of her pinkie. A earring back would be smaller, I think, wouldn't it?

JeeanieYuss · 17/03/2013 00:30

I assume you are talking about a small butterfly back?
Don't worry yourself, she'll be fine!!
Just keep an eye out for it down t'other end in the next couple of days Grin Wink

WorraLiberty · 17/03/2013 00:30

I think the chances of her actually finding and grabbing something so tiny...and then putting it in her mouth are probably less than zero.

Even if she did, it'd pass through into her nappy.

I really wouldn't worry if I were you...but if you really are going to worry then all you can do is turn the light on and have a thorough search...which of course means you'll have to wake her up.

A metal one, Would it do damage if she has swallowed it?
Naysa the sensible part of me says thats more likely, but I put my hair up just before feeding her and I'm pretty sure I'd have noticed a back missing when putting it up though

I agree with Worra, it's doubtful a 5mo has the fine motor skills to pick something so tiny up in the first place, but in the unlikely event that she has then it'll come out the other end no bother.

Hope you're feeling less worried after reading these replies Smile

LowFlyingKites · 17/03/2013 00:35

Sorry x post yes a butterfly back one. Worra that's a good point, as long as it'd pass though that's ok, but I'm just panicking it'd do some damage while going through if she has

Thank you, sorry I think I'm having a slightly sleep deprived PFB panic

I think I would be less worried about a metal one for choking since they are very open. I think you could breathe through that pretty easily.

For her insides, as a child I had pica and ate all manner of things without doing myself any harm. I wouldn't worry too much. Check her nappies and call your GP if you are worried at all.

manorandshua · 17/03/2013 00:37

I agree with Naysa. It happened to me. You could have lost the
Back well before you got to your baby's room.often front stays
On sticking to the earlobe for a while after losing/removing the back.If she has
Swallowed it ( very unlikely IMO) without any problem it would
Just come out on the other end.

BubblegumPie · 17/03/2013 00:39

Don't worry about it kites, when DD was about a week old I rang the NHS helpline because she hadn't pooed that day. Hmm

Her dad wanted to buy a baby sized helmet when she started crawling too Grin

Buzzardbird · 17/03/2013 08:24

Trust me on this one...its inside your bra. If you have already undressed it will be on the floor.

shushpenfold · 17/03/2013 08:26

She'll be fine, even if she does find and eat. My 2 dd yo once ate the biggest magnet you've ever seen......we had to find it in her poo with a metal spoon.....such joy!
