This will be dc 2 and after having a sort out in the loft iv got more than enough newish looking white & cream bits to see us through the first few weeks. Don't know what we're having so not worth me buying shed loads of unisex stuff anyway and people usually buy loads of clothes.
We have a new matress for cot but can we use old sheets too?
Dd is 4 and they have all been stored in loft in plastic bags and will all be given a good wash in preparation for baby.

I will probably just buy a few white bits to take to hospital but a lot of the things I have found still have tags!

YANBU. It's sensible to use things that have plenty of life left in them and there's nothing at all wrong with cot sheets that have been used before.

Smartiepants79 · 16/03/2013 16:06

I didn't buy much.
Did buy one nice 'coming home' outfit. But then I'm a little bit obsessed with making sure I treat my daughters 'the same'.
Probably need to get over that....Smile

JollyYellowGiant · 16/03/2013 16:08

We are buying very little for DC2. We need a couple of new mattresses and some new vests and babygros but that's about all until we buy a high chair.

If DC2 is a girl we'll probably get some tights and hair clips. If not they'll live in DS's old clothes.

nevertoolate26 · 16/03/2013 16:08

Personally I think anybody buying vastly expensive things for any newborn after the first child is unreasonable - but that's my personal view.
Use what you have - I just wash everything at 6o degrees (would wash higher if I could lol!). and like you said you'll be given lots of stuff from other well wishers. Save your money for when you will really need it.
So, YANBU
Congratulations by the way.

applesandbears · 16/03/2013 16:08

I didn't buy much for dd2, just a new outfit for coming home in as I like to put them in their special boxes and new bottles.

catlady1 · 16/03/2013 16:10

I'm having my first and the only things I've bought new are the cot mattress and a few babygrows. I've been given a few new things as gifts but everything else is second-hand. I can't really see the point of spending lots on brand new stuff that's only used for a short time, especially when there's second hand stuff that's just as good.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/03/2013 16:10

I bought very little for DD2. Was even worse because their birthdays are one day apart so all of the clothes were the right season. I bought new vests and babygros for the hospital bag, a new carseat and a new coming home outfit.

Mind you, it's not as easy as all that once they arrive. DD2 absolutely doesn't need any clothes but there are such lovely outfits in the shops...

oldraver · 16/03/2013 16:11

No its sensible. My SIL has had her 2nd, 14months after her first, and she has re-used all her stuff. I havn't got round to a present so I think I will send her a voucher so she can get something of her choosing.

sweetkitty · 16/03/2013 16:11

I had to buy new bits for DD2 as she was a winter baby compared to DD1 being a summer baby. She was also 3lbs heavier so didn't get to wear the teeny clothes. DD3 got hardly anything new, remember you will get cute little outfits as presents too. DS got new loathes though Grin

I have photos of the 3 DDs wearing the same dress I love passing things down.

ditsydoll · 16/03/2013 16:12

Dd was bought an abundance of things (I went a little overboard with her being my first) were making sure we have new mattresses for everything and have had to buy a new pram but just thought it seemed silly to buy new when we already had enough, they are only worn for a few minutes and usually end up in a right state anyway don't they!
Yes I might just buy a nice little coming home outfit.
Definitely saved ourselves a pretty penny by keeping dds old things though :)

I only bought a new car seat for my DD and she is my first. I can't see the point in buying new for babies as they grow out of everything so quickly!

StateofConfusion · 16/03/2013 16:16

yanbu as long as your buying a New carseat they are not safe after being stored in lofts garages etc. learnt that after keeping ours and then having to chuck instead of passing to friends so it actually got used.

Kiwiinkits · 16/03/2013 16:16

It's only sensible to use stuff again. Not to mention environmentally responsible. Then pass it on to the next person who can use it.
YANBU

Bejeena · 16/03/2013 16:29

I am having my first and have no intention of buying anything new for the baby apart from car seat and cot mattress. The rest I want to get second hand or borrow, not because of the cost but just to try and reduce our family's carbon footprint Wink

Floralnomad · 16/03/2013 16:35

YANBU ,its very sensible . That said I had a 6 year gap between mine and the only thing we'd kept was the cot , also I've always found that half the fun of having babies is the shopping .

sweetkitty · 16/03/2013 16:37

I found it terribly sad folding away all the baby clothes knowing some things were only worn 1-2 times. I like to get full use out of things.

RooneyMara · 16/03/2013 16:40

I don't know - yes most things it's wise to re-use. But I find I associate some things with each child - I like to keep some of ds1's little clothes, some of ds2's and I bought some new things for ds3 as well, so he had some things that were just his.

I had big gaps though between all of mine, and some of the things I kept weren't so nice after the second child had used them so they went.

lustybusty · 16/03/2013 16:53

My little brother wore a not insignificant amount of pink up till the age of about 5 Grin.
I also remember being very put out (5 year age gap) when he started wearing my favouritist coat (a pale green padded, safari patterned number with lots of pockets each with a small stuffed safari type animal inside). I loved that coat. So no, YADNBU to reuse stuff! Just watch out for dd1 trying to put on a long forgotten favourite item which is now waaaaaay too small!!

flossy101 · 16/03/2013 16:58

Yanbu. I lost my mind buying for my first, I honestly don't know what I was thinking buying so much.

I will be infinitely more sensible next time round and will re use everything.

Manchesterhistorygirl · 16/03/2013 16:59

You are not being unreasonable! Just chuck them, sheets included, through the wash on a hot wash and you'll be fine!

DoJo · 16/03/2013 17:20

I think I only bought one pack of short and one pack of long-sleeved babygrow for my first baby - he has a cousin just a year older than him and they didn't know what they were having so all their 0-3 month clothes were unisex and we've barely had to supplement the stuff my Mum buys him ever since!
What is the danger of storing car seats though? Have done a quick google and can't find anything about keeping them in the garage, apart from checking the expiry date.

redwellybluewelly · 16/03/2013 17:29

Yanbu

If this baby (28weeks now) is a girl we'll use all dd1's clothing, they are also similar season.

I will get a new set of newborn babygros as dd1's are too much "hers" IYSWIM and some vests were stretched as dd1 grew but she was tiny so if this one is a bit bigger it will work well.

We are however getting a new car seat, ee got one from a friend first time as we rarely drove anywhere but now it makes me a bit twitchy. Oh and may trade the single pram for a double if dd1 still wants a ride.

Also once dd1 started at nursery her clothes started to get very well washed and worn. So those would need to be replaced.
