to think an 1hr and 40 minute wait at the doctors is a bit crap.

I went to the walk in clinic, 6 people ahead of me, appointments are 5 mins long, really needed to see the doctor, otherwise i'd have walked out and waited for an actual appointment next week.

Probably Unreasonable, but so tiring just waiting, my 5 yr old was as good as gold though.

1hr 40 mins is not that long tbh ive had to
Wait over 3 hrs at walk in clinic for DD then 6 months. So YABU

crashdoll · 15/03/2013 18:23

That's pretty speedy for a walk-in clinic IMO!

CloudsAndTrees · 15/03/2013 18:30

For a walk in clinic, YABU. I've waited significantly longer than that for booked outpatients appointments.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 15/03/2013 18:41

DD often takes up an awful lot of time when we go to a walk-in but that's because she's proper poorly and struggling to breathe. We're in and out as quick as we can be and don't aim to hold people up but I guess there will be lots of folk in the waiting room huffing and puffing about the length of time she's in there.

I know it's annoying having to wait when you are ill and have to keep a young child entertained but 1hr40 min for a free walk in appointment doesn't seem too bad to me.

Unfortunately in the Irish town I live in all the GPs are massively over subscribed so I have sometimes had to wait up to 2 hrs even with an appointment and then pay ?45 for the visit.

So all in all, I have to say YABU in this case.

VinegarDrinker · 15/03/2013 19:11

Appointments may be meant to be 5 minutes, but that is quite irrelevant if someone has something wrong which takes longer to sort out.
What do you think the Dr was doing with the first patient for 30 minutes? Chatting about the weather over a coffee?

ilovesooty · 15/03/2013 19:16

YABU. Our open surgery is in the afternoons and I never go unless it is an emergency: a 2-3 hour wait is not unusual. However the waiting time for getting booked appointments is reasonable and most of the doctors are great. My regular GP says that too many people attend open surgery who have general colds and when asked if they've tried paracetamol and fluids just say "No, I thought I'd come here first." Unsurprisingly he feels that genuinely ill people would get a better service if people used their common sense.

ilovesooty · 15/03/2013 19:18

Mind you, I once went to open surgery when I was taken ill on Christmas Eve. There was nobody there apart from me. Go figure.

maisiejoe123 · 21/03/2013 15:50

I recently went to a Walk In Centre as the GP couldnt fit me in that day. I waited 1.5 hours which I thought was reasonable. However what really shocked me were the number of people coming in and asking to see a doctor.

Three of them were asked for proof of address and one chap said he had nothing at all..... They were told by the receptionist (who had clearly had miserable lessons) to come back when they were able to prove they were entitled to the treatment.

It is a very multi cultural part of the country and the staff were really struggling, a couple of people didnt have English as a first language and one didnt know what a nurse was....

Whenever I hear anyone complaining about the NHS I simply tell them to ask for a refund.

cumfy · 21/03/2013 16:18

Were you triaged ?

If you were misprioritised YANBU.

Otherwise a visit to your local grip shop is prescribed.

LeeCoakley · 21/03/2013 16:32

Ha! We wait that long in our surgery for a normal appointment. Anyone seen within half an hour automatically thinks they've jumped the queue. Grin At 9.00am all six doctors are already running late so you just settle down with a good book and try not to feel frustrated.

You just have to accept that in a walk-in clinic you will probably have to wait hours to be seen. But it's a good facility to have - ours has closed Sad

stormforce10 · 21/03/2013 16:33

Waiting that long is annoying but you have to keep thinking of the reasons it may be happening and thanking god its not you needing the doctor for that long today

I once went to the GP for a 5 minute appointment and finally walked out an hour later still in floods of tears. I'm not going into details about what was wrong with me but suffice to say it did not help when someone in the waiting room said loudly so I could hear "well she's walking so she can't have needed the GP that much we haven't got all day you know love". Horrid. I knew I'd kept them all waiting but right then I needed that help :(
