I have my one year old in a Britax first class plus which is similar in price to a maxi cosi 0+ carseat but is a 0+/1 seat. Because it is designed to be used until 4yrs of age it means that babies can stay rearfacing for longer in it (it has a longer back so their head doesn't reach the top as quickly). According to my red book the average child reaches 13kg around 2 years of age. DS2 is following the 50th centile so should be able to stay rear facing in the Britax first class plus until around 2 and then it can be turned forward facing up to 18kgs (about 4). This is a cheaper option for those who can't afford an extended rearfacing seat. About 100 pounds for a carseat that lasts until age 4 but has the room to keep child rearfacing until 13kgs (most babies seem to outgrow 0+ seats before reaching 13kgs). I know it's best to rear face for longer if possible but if moneys tight that's not always an option.
