To live without a landline...

... Or home Internet - relying instead on 3G mobile & 'all you can eat' Internet

Depends very much on the speed and quality of the mobile Internet in your area!

kinkyfuckery · 14/03/2013 19:46

Not a problem if you don't expect others to phone you, or have anyone who may be reliant on having to contact you at some point.

AnyFucker · 14/03/2013 19:54

Lots of people don't have landlines these days

KikkiK · 14/03/2013 20:00

I don't have a landline, and use mobile broadband on a dongle. I manage fine, I spend £15 a month on internet and that's with spending far too much time online every evening.
Mind you, the only people who phone me regularly are my mum and sister, who both have mobiles on the same network so it is free. I can see how it would be expensive for people to phone someone with no landline otherwise.

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/03/2013 20:06

Also be aware that not having a landline can suggest to business that there maybe financial reasons and a judgement maybe made.

FringeEvent · 14/03/2013 20:08

I don't have an actual telephone plugged into my landline, and haven't for about 3 years now - I couldn't even tell you what the phone number is here. Can't see the point in having yet another phone number when we already have a mobile each, plus Skype accounts. But we do have broadband (as DH needs a fast connection for his work) which runs off the landline.

flyingspaghettimonster · 14/03/2013 20:10

We haven't had a landing in 7 years. No bother. We prefer mobiles as it lets us screen calls.

milf90 · 14/03/2013 20:12

Our internets broken and I have to use 3G on my phone. I'm finding it a pita tbh! Everything just takes so much longer and some things I just can't do. Oh has had to go to McDonald's with my laptop to use their wifi and is going again tomorrow (working from home as he has injured his leg)

I think you could survive if you just browse the Internet, go on mumsnet etc but for both of our works it's impossible with out phones (oh has a windows phone too!) and I tried doing tesco shopping online on it and I gave up because it was taking too long.

suebfg · 14/03/2013 20:41

I want to go without the landline too.

Mandy2003 · 14/03/2013 20:55

YANBU - I did this for years using my mobile as a dongle plugged into the PC. It was only annoying if someone phoned my mobile and cut me off the internet!

It's been a longstanding bone of contention with my ISP that I do not want a landline phone with inclusive minutes and just want to pay (cheaper) line rental. Eventually they looked at my account and exclaimed - "You don't make any calls!" And let me have broadband at half price. Still got the phone though Angry

RipleyIsMyHero · 14/03/2013 20:57

I asked sky to disconnect my landline which they have and now I save around 15 quid a month. Still have broadband and TV although i'm thinking about knocking the TV on the head as I never watch it. I hardly ever used my landline. I have unlimited minutes on my mobile so it hasn't been a problem

Nancy66 · 14/03/2013 20:58

Not having a landline can affect your credit rating.

If you have a good record then it's unlikely to but if a lender is on the fence about you then it might.

Geekster · 14/03/2013 21:02

At least it will save you from having irritating cold callers on a land line and mobile! My friend hasn't got a landline and she manages fine. I should think there are very few people who have got a mobile these days.

BackforGood · 14/03/2013 21:04

Depends on your whole family set up, and who else phones you

  • it can be really expensive for people to phone a mobile, whereas landlines are either free in the rental, or a LOT cheaper.
-I quite often phone home, because I want to ask whoever is at home to do something / check something... I don't want to go through everyone's mobiles, to find out who is in. -We need the landline for the cable - for both internet and TV, internet being picked up by any one of 5 laptops and the pc, which I don't think we could do without the landline. -Not uncommon for me not to be able to get a signal on my phone -Internet is always much slower on my phone than on the broadband coming down the phone line.

Of course, YANBU if it works for you, but if you were wondering if it would work for everyone, then the answer is 'no' here.

IntheFrame · 14/03/2013 21:06

I love my landline and don't have a mobile. Used to and I don't miss it

Bollocks to people thinking they can get me 24/7. Leave a message on my landline and I'll get back to you. Next.

ENormaSnob · 14/03/2013 21:12

I rarely use my landline and could definitely manage without but thought I needed it for broadband?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/03/2013 21:13

We've kept ours, poor mobile signal for calls is one reason, 3G is Ok but not a patch on broadband.

Also need it for when DS (9) is at home on his own, he needs to be able to reach me on my mobile and he's not having one of his own for another couple of years yet, will be keeping it at least till youngest Dc has their own mobile.

We have a landline phone that reads out the number or name if in the contacts list of the caller when it rings, so you don't have to get out of your chair to ignore people. You can block numbers on it too.

It is also MUCH cheaper than mobiles for 0845 nos etc.

hugoagogo · 14/03/2013 21:21

There is also a safety aspect; it is recommended that you have a landline to call emergency services.

cricketballs · 14/03/2013 21:28

we have a landline - but just for the broadband (another one who lives in the back of beyond where cable doesn't go Grin) but we have not had a phone plugged in for at least 4 years! I have enough minutes on my mobile plan, DH has a phone through work that he can use for personal and the eldest also has a mobile.

I can't even remember what the number is and have to look it up when I fill in forms which does seem ridiculous in this day of age that some companies demand a landline number Hmm

smegley · 14/03/2013 21:39

I don't have one, I still have virgin broadband though.
I am seriously considering getting one installed because after looking around I've realised that i can get a better deal with another provider .
