to be miffed at the scaffolders' incompetence?!

DISCLAIMER: Slightly Trivial Alert

OK, having a new roof. Scaffolders arrived yesterday and start erecting the scaffolding, of course.

I leave the house around half 4 and all is well. I come home to find that they have put the scaffolding across the front of our satellite dish, knocking out the signal.

They have not damaged the dish (AFAIK).

I was not cross about this at all last night, unlike DP who raved on about it a bit. I said to him something like "I'm sure they will sort it tomorrow".

Today they have all sucked their teeth and stroked their chins at him (he is at home) and have said they can't move the scaffolding.

I am cross about this today because I wonder how they could have failed to notice a bleedy great dish and why they didn't work round it, which, they lead us to believe, is something they should have done.

Now, my objection to this is not that the TV is gone, I promise. After all, I could watch it on that catch up app on DP's tablet.

At work today, my colleague and I were talking about it and she is of the opinion that IABVVU and I have to lump it until the job is done, which may take a week or two or maybe more, weather depending.

AIBU to think that they are dopes for doing this-they have told DP that they could have put it lower but didn't think to, as it's an "awkward corner" (eh?), and to think they should put it right?

Genuine question. I am surprised at being told IABU today as I am always right, but quite happy to go with the consensus.

And before you say it-IANBU in having a satellite dish, there is no cable where we live backward backwater

scurryfunge · 14/03/2013 16:22

I would be inclined to put up with it for just a couple of weeks.

PeppermintPasty · 14/03/2013 16:27

Well, I think the die is cast on that one-my DP, who is a bit handy, is going to put it up somewhere else in the garden apparently.

But I wonder if IWBU to bring it up with the boss man. I suppose I would as it would not achieve anything other than giving me a chance to complain, which I do love Grin

YANBU. If you pay a monthly fee for your satellite tv then you are losing two weeks worth of that fee. I would be pissed off. I would also tell them to sort it out and not to think of charging me - unless by doing that it delays the roof going on, in which case, you probably have to suck it up.

cozietoesie · 14/03/2013 16:30

Probably as well to bring it up just in case they actually have damaged it and you have to claim.

scurryfunge · 14/03/2013 16:31

They would probably move it if you kicked up enough fuss but then they would lose a day's building when it could be finished sooner.

wineandroses · 14/03/2013 16:31

Yes read your update - if DH is moving it, then that saves the scaffolders a job. Still complain though, especially as you love it.

PeppermintPasty · 14/03/2013 16:41

Grin wineandroses

I don't really. I'm just the one who has to sort anything head on. My dp would much rather avoid confrontation by any means, the great drip!

Cozie you make a good point, of course I must mention it in case of damage. Ta.

And we don't pay a subscription. We have freeview but the only way to get a signal here is via the dish.

squeakytoy · 14/03/2013 16:44

That happens all the time with scaffolding, it isnt incompetence, they cant work around your dish. I run an aerial and satellite company and my engineers go out almost daily to resite the dishes ONTO the scaffolding to that it carries on working while the scaffold is up.

squeakytoy · 14/03/2013 16:46

"my DP, who is a bit handy, is going to put it up somewhere else in the garden apparently"

you cant do that.. it wont work! it has to be aligned using a meter, you cant just point it in the right direction and hope! :)

landrover · 14/03/2013 16:46

I think this is perfectly normal and you have to lump it im afraid xxxxx

PeppermintPasty · 14/03/2013 16:50

Ah, now you see squeaky, that's what I need to know. My first thought, from a layman's perspective, that it was idiotic of them, but I then wondered if this was the norm.

I am not so precious as to think the dish must be re-sited at all costs, but I did think they were a bit soft not to talk to me until after the deed was done, or explain the normal approach to me.

MN rules, even with the trivial stuff!

I have no idea but I would get your OH to sort it out and get back to your embroidery and kittens. Wink

squeakytoy · 14/03/2013 16:52

I should say, it is usually the scaffolders or building company who pay for the resite of the dish.. not always, but most of the time.

If you are in Surrey or London I can supply an engineer. Grin

PeppermintPasty · 14/03/2013 16:53

Re your second post squeaky-he really is handy, he put it up on the house in the first place. Our original one rusted away (we're by the sea), so a friend gave him our current one and he aligned it and everything. I think he has a thingummy to do it with, he loves gadgets.

He should get a job at yours.

x post-thank you for the offer!! Grin

Nina, exactly. My delicate fingers are itching to do some cross stitch after I've chopped all the wood, lit the stoves, cooked the tea, oh and painted the porch Wink

Of course they are PP. What else are DHs good for?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/03/2013 17:08

There's lots of work going on on the HA houses near me. Rows of terraces, all with the satellite dishes mounted on the scaffolding.

Maybe they could move your dish for you?
