Remember if she is BF she will have some of your antibodies

RoseandVioletCreams · 13/03/2013 21:13

really? yes she is EBF which is why we had huge probs with calpol last week.
thats good to know!

I had to have a blood test to check my immunity before they would let me leave the hospital with ds2 as ds1 had chicken pox. I was immune and they said ds2 would get immunity from me for about 6 months. He is now 15 and has never had it despite both his brothers having it and being exposed many times.

My sisters ds got it at 5 weeks despite her having had it but only had a few spots and was not unwell at all.

Smartiepants79 · 13/03/2013 21:33

Have you tried administering cal pol with a syringe?
You can buy them at pharmacy. Works for my EBF 4 month old!
And no, why on earth wold anyone WANT their baby to be ill.
Pray for no pox!

RoseandVioletCreams · 13/03/2013 21:53

Yes I have smartie, it was that was making her gag, she wont take dummy or anything in her mouth.

I am sure I had the pox, my first DD was BF for about 8 weeks and she came down with it at 3 years?

Footface · 13/03/2013 22:06

Calpol andnurophen do these fan syringes that sort of dribble the medicine into mouth so they don't get the squirt bit ifyswim.

TheChaoGoesMu · 13/03/2013 22:10

My ds got it at 10 weeks and he was ebf. He was covered in spots, but still didn't seem very poorly with it, unlike older dc.

Smartiepants79 · 13/03/2013 22:11

I just lay her back and squirt it down into the side of the cheek. She coughs but swallows it!
It's what the nurse did in hospital to get her to take it.

IsItMeOr · 13/03/2013 22:11

The immunity from EBF doesn't last (significantly) beyond when you're BFing - not sure if that was what you're getting at in your last question OP?

RoseandVioletCreams · 13/03/2013 22:12

Oooh havant seen those will ask at chemist tomorow foot, thats good the chao. my older DD had it at three and was fine, bit of a temp the day the spots started but fine.

i would just rather not the little baby had it with this bad chest.
i am so stupid the baby she might of got it offs mum was desperate for her baby and toddler to get it, i shouldnt have gone to this thing with her! Angry

IsItMeOr · 13/03/2013 22:13

But I thought the immunity for newborns to CP came from you via the placenta before birth, rather than via breastmilk...[no expert disclaimer]

RoseandVioletCreams · 13/03/2013 22:14

Yes is it me,

thats what I meant as someone said they had immunity and passed onto baby.

so i should be passing on my possible immunity if i am BF.

OP posts:
bruffin · 13/03/2013 22:18

Bf doesn't pass on immune

foreverondiet · 13/03/2013 22:34

My niece got it from her brother when she was 3 months old, my sister was told that her DD would not get it as she was EBF but she got it anyway, but it was very mild, just a few spots. She is now 7 and hasn't had it again even through been exposed to it in school several times.

RoseandVioletCreams · 13/03/2013 22:55

This is half the problem, no one seems to know when the catch time is and immuity etc.

saintlyjimjams · 13/03/2013 23:00

If you had a good dose of chickenpox yourself she should be fine - immunity from you. DS2 was exposed by his brother when he was 8 months old - didn't get it. In fact was exposed by other kids after that - didn't get it until he was 2. I actually never knowingly had chickenpox but must have been exposed at some stage as I had antibodies (was checked after an exposure during pregnancy)

RoseandVioletCreams · 13/03/2013 23:47

I dont know if I did saintly. Have been reading that babies under 12 months can get shingles later on - ie as children.

I know its air borne and people can get it without knowing, but I think if your going activly expose YOUR DC to it, please warn everyone at groups you may be going too - to at least give them the bloody choice.

I really do not want my baby to have this. Angry

Purplecatti · 14/03/2013 02:31

I was told the immunity from mother to baby lasts 6 to 8 weeks

LargeGlassofRed · 14/03/2013 03:01

Have you tried the full sugar calpol rather than the sugar free? My little ones hate the sugar free but will happily take the full sugar strawberry one.

honeytea · 14/03/2013 03:29

We use paracetamol tablets that you put up the baby's bum, I was sceptical at first but they work really well you don't need to worry about the baby vomiting them back up or spitting it out.

saintlyjimjams · 14/03/2013 06:47

Purple - immunity lasts varying lengths - but when ds1 had it I asked the paediatrician we were seeing for him ( nothing to do with CP) whether Ds2 was likely to get it at 8 months & he said he may well still have immunity. He obviously did as he didn't get it for another few years.

saintlyjimjams · 14/03/2013 06:54

www.sciencej.com/ajhb/maria_1_1_2011_8_12.pdf - this is an interesting paper. Anyway it seems that if chickenpox vaccination is given it is given at 12 months because if given earlier maternal antibodies interfere. The bit about the possibility of an increasing window of susceptibility won't apply here as chickenpox is not a routine vaccination.

This sort of ties in with what the paed said to us.

Of course this depends on you having had chickenpox - but you probably have as it's so widespread here, even if you had an asymptomatic version (as I did)

ProudAS · 14/03/2013 11:29

I seem to remember hearing that children who caught CP within their first year were quite likely to get it again (I think risk of this happening decreases with age at which person is infected).

If she's EBF she'll probably be fine though.

Moominlandmidwinter · 14/03/2013 18:08

I was convinced that our 5 month old DD was going to catch Chicken Pox, her cousin came to visit a few weeks ago, and was kissing a cuddling her. The very next day, we got a call to say that he was plastered in the pox. Apparently, the day before the rash appears, it is the most contagious. DD is fine, and it was nearly a month ago. Hopefully your baby will have some immunity from you.

bloodyschool · 14/03/2013 18:45

My DD1 had it at 5 months when her sibs had it and it was very very mild. Best age to get it over with I say
