Dogs!

Ok think I may be flamed here but...
AIBU to think some people shut their dogs in the garden instead of walking them. We have a dog barking out there again (and again and again!) it's freezing cold. (Horizontal hail earlier!) I have NEVER seen these dogs walked.
We don't have a dog at the moment but I did have them growing up. Cold? Wear a jumper. Wet? Wear a coat. Poor animals need to get out. Poor neighbours do not need the noise.
Rant over. Flame away!
PS. I would be happy to borrow a dog to walk. Grin

Completely agree. Enough said Grin

Wolfiefan · 11/03/2013 22:25

But surely half the fun in having a dog is the walks?

Woofers · 11/03/2013 22:26

100% agree. I have man flu, yet I have dragged myself out to walk 4 dogs 3 times a day over the weekend. And it's not all bad cause getting home to a wood burner and a cup of tea is fab!

MothershipG · 11/03/2013 22:27

Why do you think you'll be flamed? Dog lovers will object to the mistreatment of the dogs and dog haters will object to the noise nuisance.

All MN will be combined in agreement and harmony (for once). Wink

Think this will be a very short thread...

cozietoesie · 11/03/2013 22:28

In my recent experience, some (not all) dog owners do take their dogs out for a walk but it's just so that the poor beasts won't defecate in the garden ie it's a quick drag on the lead round the block. Not a walk as I would understand it.

Wolfiefan · 11/03/2013 22:29

I'm jealous Woofers! I suppose I thought I'd be flamed as I was worried this would come across as criticising all dog owners but it seems for once I was clear enough!
Still haven't found a mutt to borrow!

Go and knock on their door to offer your services?

Wolfiefan · 11/03/2013 22:36

Um they are not "friendly" neighbours. Poor dogs.

YANBU at all. All dogs need food, water, shelter, exercise and company. They're not optional, they're necessities.

WestieMamma · 11/03/2013 23:13

You should all meet my female Westie. The only thing that would get her to walk beyond the garden gate would be a hotdog stand at the end of the road. My other Westie gets walked daily but she refuses to go.

DeepRedBetty · 11/03/2013 23:15

Yanbu. I do the walks for the clients, little do they know I'd happily do it for free. (Well, some of the time anyway.)

Today I really felt I'd earned my fees!

teatrolley · 11/03/2013 23:36

But you give her the option WM.

Goldmandra · 11/03/2013 23:37

We have a puppy who would be happy in the garden yapping away for several hours a day. She can see a monster through a gap in the fence to next door (something flapping in the wind maybe) and is trying to frighten it away I think. I have to let her out now and then in case she needs a wee and then try to distract her enough to be enticed back in the house with sausages. The neighbours probably think we're shutting her out in the cold and feeling really sorry for her Sad

You'd be welcome to borrow her any day if you lived in Worcestershire. She thinks everyone she meets is head over heels in love with her and can run far and fast through fields for hours given half a chance. It's actually really lovely watching her enjoying just running for the hell of it. I'd be so thin if I could have a bit of that!

MothershipG · 12/03/2013 08:27

Where do you live? You can borrow any or all of mine! Smile

TwoIfBySea · 12/03/2013 08:40

You're not to be flamed for being concerned over a dog's welfare! Not all dog owners do this same as not all dog owners leave their dog's sh*t all over the place for other people to stand in (my own personal bugbear!)

One of my neighbour's daughters has a husky. Beautiful breed but needs lots of exercise. It gets shut in the house all day while she is at work and they wonder why it's having fits. I did offer to walk him with my dog (unsurprisingly he is not good on the leash & runs off the minute they let him.)

Got to take care of our four legged family members! Sticking it in the garden with no shelter is cruel.

Bluebelleswood · 14/03/2013 20:24

We have a neighbour who allows his dog to bark all day in his garden. He rarely takes the poor animal out for a walk. I often wonder if I should offer to walk his dog when I take mine out, but I am afraid of how he might receive this.
Should I ask him?

MikeOxardAndWellard · 14/03/2013 22:21

Um, they have to go in the garden quite often as well as walks, to pee and poo (and play!), so YABU if you think one walk a day will stop you hearing them bark in the garden. Also, are you always home and does their house face yours, because otherwise you really wouldn't see if they're walked or not unless they pass your window on their way, would you?
