To be a bit jealous of the Doomsday Preppers?

Watching a show about it on National Geographic.

They are SO prepared.

I want a secret Doomsday Shelter in the country, with stockpiles of food and water.

I am seriously considering stockpiling tinned beans and bottled water when the next offer comes on in Sainsburys...

I would prefer to stockpile lots of chocolate & coca-cola so i can be buzzing through any Apocalyptical event.

slatternlymother · 11/03/2013 20:08

I want some special shelving for my shed, so I can stockpile tinned goods and blankets.

DH looked at me like I had gone mad when I mentioned it...

I am terrified at the idea of anything post-apocalyptic.

I think if I lived in my own land and could see a way to survive I would have a go but we live in an area with no natural resources and, when our water went off during the night recently Sainsburys were out of water by 8.30am so we're screwed.

Latara · 11/03/2013 20:15

But were Sainsbury's out of Vodka, Tequila etc by 8.30am?? If not then at least you can buy enough alcohol to not remember the Apocalypse.

onetiredmummy · 11/03/2013 20:18

Hahaha I particularly enjoyed the Prepper who collected 11,00 seeds & he was worried about food being contaminated by radioactivity & his plan was to store them...wait for it... in a tent....yeah because a tent keeps out radioactivity doesn't it! Foolproof!

& also the chap who just didn't see that his collection would make him a target & everything would be nicked in 5 seconds flat.

slatternlymother · 11/03/2013 20:18

I am actually considering purchasing a house that has a big plot of land.

In Imagination Land; I will have a small holding where I shall spend endless hours in the sun, gardening and jarring up food to preserve.

11,000!

Bowlersarm · 11/03/2013 20:19

I would love to be able to stockpile in case of Armageddon. However DH would think i was being very weird and very dramatic. I have managed to secretly squirrel a few tins away but in all honestly they would only last the 5 of us about three days, so not a great deal of use really

slatternlymother · 11/03/2013 20:20

onetired I liked the woman, who told the camera with no sense of irony that all her cats would be shot "right through the brain stem" as she mimed shooting the cat on her lap with her fingers, and got all huffy when Nat Geo 'critiqued' her prepping at only 40% effective Grin

i am a prepper although not to the scale of the people on tv. i only stockpile food for the worse case scenario ie a petrol strike and food cannot be circulated immediately. as for end of days scenarios, i wouldn't want to survive. these tv preppers haven't thought it through. for nuclear/solar flare etc etc situations the worse thing WOULD be to survive. and as for going public about it, bloody idiots. lord forbid if there was a food shortage all the local thugs would be banging their door down :D i don't tell anyone. dh thinks i am nuts so ignores it. there is a company called mountain house which sell freeze dried food with a shelf life of 25 years. it is bloody expensive though so i just buy a couple of tins a year (only been doing it a few years). they also sell water filters etc. hopefully it is money wasted if you get my meaning...

slatternlymother · 11/03/2013 20:32

wintertime it has got me thinking about how unprepared we are if there were to be an incident that stopped food/supplies being circulated for a few days/weeks.

YANBU, DH likes to watch this and I've had to stop as it gives me a strong urge to fill the cupboard under the stairs with non-perishable goods Grin

slatternlymother · 11/03/2013 20:37

Yes!! I am desperate to stockpile! sigh

I am wistful over their sheds filled with custom shelving stocked with mountains of tinned goods...

i have this morbid fear about such things and have always loved to fee secure hense my neurosis on this subject. dh and i had an argument about it the other year, i can see his point of view. i saw an episode of wife swap the other day (american). one couple's whole life was one big prep, their poor kids, they had to take safety packs to school daily with all sorts of stuff in there. they practised how to survive zombie's...... i have read alot over the years about many 'end of day's scenarios and in truth, i really wouldn't want to survive any of them..... scary stuff. did you see the film The Road? if in doubt, watch this. surviving would be beyond bad

timidviper · 11/03/2013 20:40

wintertime So how long do you aim to have supplies for? I can see the logic in having a small supply but have no idea how long to plan for.
Why would you buy stuff that lasts 25yrs? Why not buy a stock of e.g. canned baked beans and keep rotating them?

timi* - tbh i stock pile them too, in the loft :) but the mountain house tins are fab' as you can forget about them, each tin caters for more than one helping. tins in supermarkets only have a couple of years. also, the mountain house stuff is a 'meal' freeze dried ie spagetti bolog', chicken rice dish etc. i wouldn't buy loads and loads, just ie a years worth (i need to save and buy a fair few more tins), it just makes me feel more comfortable mentally (i am an anxious person, sadly). you should have a look on their website. blimey, it reads as if i am on commision. actually, it is nice to talk about it, one has to be secretive about this, sometimes i am itching to discuss it with friends but don't/can't (i am also a bit embarrassed by it, as you would be). i also stockpile batterys, candles, matches and medicine :)

Bowlersarm · 11/03/2013 20:51

Although I haven't stockpiled (yet) I do have a cunning plan in event of a doomsday scenario. I read somewhere that supermarkets would be stripped bare within 24 hours and you would have about three days before society starting breaking down.

So I always keep car over half full of petrol so would be able to travel if needed to. I would stock up with supermarket provisions plus get cash out of bank at the first sign of trouble, and then make sure we all stayed at home hopefully until the situation resolved itself. I grow some vegetable so should have some fresh food available

VerySmallSqueak · 11/03/2013 20:57

I stockpile skills instead of goods.
I can build (and cook on) a campfire, pluck, skin and gut, build a bender, shoot and read an OS map well.
I would have to rely on other people's stockpiles of food and water, when they run for the hills/ fail to survive.

Bowlersarm · 11/03/2013 20:58

I hope you live near me VerySmallSqueak

wintertimeisfun · 11/03/2013 21:00

very you could have mine as i wouldn't be running anyway :D

VerySmallSqueak · 11/03/2013 21:02

It's all bloody good fun,Bowlers and the kids love that sort of stuff.
All I have for a food stockpile though is some elderly icing sugar and some pearl barley (making wholesome broths always seems like such a good idea until it comes to actually making the.....)

AnAirOfHope · 11/03/2013 21:05

Would it not be easier to take over and sucure the Hanze baked bean factory?

Time effective and cost effecient Grin

I would stock pile toilet roll instead and pads lol

Flobbadobs · 11/03/2013 21:07

Oh god I am so glad I'm not the only one who thinks about this!! I aim to keep a stock of dried food and long life stuff in and have been teaching myself to darn, sew, knit and getting more self sufficient. I even have a book on self sufficiency that I'm following as much as possible!! I thought I was being daft...
You lot are fab Smile

VerySmallSqueak · 11/03/2013 21:07

timid if you plan to stay where you are (and can defend your property and stockpile) you should stockpile as much as you want tbh, both long life stuff and by rotation.

But do not forget that you will need a clean water supply too - and that can be a lot harder!
