...to think it should've shown up by now?

So, go to check my account this morning, as I need to buy a dress etc for a wedding next week. On opening the account, it says I have lets say.....£800, so I'm thinking 'ace, don't have to worry about money, can buy the dress'.

When I actually go into the account, I realise that I still haven't been charged (or it's not showing up online at least) for purchases I made on Friday, to the tune of £200 at least. So, in reality, I only have £600 (or less).

Now, this might not be a big deal if it was £800....but it would be if it was £200, as any more purchases would take me over into the overdraft.

AIBU to think that a purchase I made three days ago really should show up by now??

(Figures are imaginary, before any of you go OOOOOOOOOO, only £800? How DO you manage?!?)

YABU - saturday and sunday are not banking days. It will probably come out at some time today or maybe tomorrow. I have had transactions take a good few days to show.

You know in your head you made the purchase so what does it matter when it shows on your statement??

thegreylady · 11/03/2013 09:44

This worries me too. I tend to use my debit card for most purchases and several times recently I have done a balance check to find much more than I expected in the account. Then when I get a statement lots of things haven't shown up and they all come together a few weeks, yes weeks, later.

Wewereherefirst · 11/03/2013 09:44

YABU. You keep track of what's in the bank and the companies will reconcile their tiles when they normally do. Two working days isn't that long.

If you want instant transactions use cash only.

Wewereherefirst · 11/03/2013 09:44

Tills not tiles. Autocorrect. Blush

Dannilion · 11/03/2013 09:45

YABU. Saturday and Sunday aren't counted as 'banking' days. Also you should be conscious of your own incomings/outgoings if you're so worried about goin into your overdraft. Or just in general, really.

yabu, whenever i make a purchase on a friday or over the weekend, it takes until tuesday or so to show up. if you're that worried about money, make a note of what you spend all the time.

littlebitofthislittlebitofthat · 11/03/2013 09:52

yes, my account does this too. any transactions made on aFriday dont show up till Tuesday on on line banking, and even at the machines! the only place i can get a correct 'how much can i spend today' bakance is from the bank teller.

when you are as skint as i am, litterally sometimes it 3.50 we are talking about... but that is the difference between me getting the bus and walking the 5 miles home

Sometimes the balance shown takes into account any recent spending even if individually they don't show up on the statement - if that makes sense. So you may find even once it shows up your balance doesn't change.....

Still very annoying, with all the technology these days it should be instant - they'd be fast enough not to let you spend money over the weekend if they needed too so why can't they show you the money that's there properly!

Happy dress buying Smile

Exactly! I just don't understand how it can't be instant these days? It's all electronic - do all the electronic things stop because it's a Sunday?
I do have a handle on my finances, but the same amount would show up if I used the ATM as well, and with it being a joint account that gets used a lot my both of us, it can be a little hard to keep a note of everything being bought!

If you click onto the separate account, it should show up "available balance" which is how much you actually have rather than the figure next to the account on the main page which is how much, but without deductions still to be made.
Also shows available balance on cash machines I think. Though maybe this is just Halifax?

DebbieLovesDallas · 11/03/2013 13:05

My account has an "account balance" and underneath in smaller writing is "available balance". I'd be screwed if I couldn't see the "available balance" I use my debit card for everything.

pinkbear82 · 11/03/2013 13:17

Available balance - that's what I was trying to explain! Lol. I blame baby brain Wink

currentbuns · 11/03/2013 13:22

Online transactions can take several days to show up, too, because often they won't charge your card until the items have actually been dispatched. Usually I have a reasonably good mental estimate of what my balances should be, but this went out the window over Christmas when I was making numerous online purchases and really had no idea what my exact balance was.

Bearbehind · 11/03/2013 13:39

YABU debit and credit cards transaction only 'capture' the required funds at the point of sale to stop you spending more than your available funds.

The transactions then have to 'poll' overnight in order to process them and for them to be sent to the relevant banks to be debited. If you make purchases on a Friday, the polling process won't commence until the Monday ie the first bank day.

I've no doubt this delay earns the banks millions in interest which is why it isn't instant, but they don't hide the fact that this is how it works.

Every online banking facility I have used shows a current balance and the available funds so it's not hard to see what funds you have.
