To be heartily relieved that Mother's Day is (nearly) over?

I've only been a member here since last autumn so this is my first Mumsnet Mother's Day.

It's enough to make me want to flounce.

FFS - it's one day in the year that is hugely commercially driven & the level of angst over it that has been posted here leave me nearly speechless.

There must be at least 10 threads running about it (and, yes, I know I've made it 11) and the heartache & stress it seems to generate is worse than bloody Christmas.

When I rule the world (which I have every intention of doing before I die Grin .) one of my first actions would be to cancel it.

Rant over. Off for a soothing Wine

I agree - I must have missed last Mother's Day on MN - it's worse than Christmas and Valentine's Day angst put together!

Or maybe I'm just smug because my DCs and DH made an effort to get me a couple of small present and lovely homemade and shop bought cards Wink. Perhaps if had been completely ignored, I'd have been one starting a thread wailing "but what about meeeeeeeeeeeee".

PitOfFique · 10/03/2013 21:02

I'm heartily relieved it's nearly over. I don't feel comfortable with the concept of Mother's Day, don't celebrate with my own mother and don't expect DH (on behalf of the young DCs) to do anything for me. However we have just had a row over the fact that I don't wish to celebrate Mother's Day: rather than my opinion being respected, DH thinks that I should swallow my 'principles' and accept it.

ClippedPhoenix · 10/03/2013 21:09

Nothing wrong whatsoever to have a day that a mum is important. Whilst I don't go overboard about it, my DS bought me a big bunch of flowers, chocolates and a wonderful card full of him telling me what I mean to him.

I loved it today, I really did.

PitOfFique · 10/03/2013 21:18

Can't believe there aren't flurries of "Anti Mother's Day" folk on Mumsnet!

Boys2mam · 10/03/2013 21:27

Its seems to me that it's always the one's who are rubbish the rest of the year who are the main culplrits in the "crap Mothers Day" posts...

Boys2mam · 10/03/2013 21:27

Men, that is...

ClippedPhoenix · 10/03/2013 21:48

Why would there be flurries of anti-mothers day folk?

A day of appreciation?

squeakytoy · 10/03/2013 21:51

Has there been anyone moaning about getting a pink mothers day card yet?

I havent seen much protest about the sea of pinkness that is every supermarket awash with cards for the last couple of weeks...

(rests wooden spoon back down)

MsVestibule · 10/03/2013 21:51

ClippedPhoenix I guess you could say that Valentines Day is a day where you can show how much you appreciate your loved one, but there's always a lot of resistance to that, on MN and in RL...

gordyslovesheep · 10/03/2013 21:54

oh goodness YANBU this place has been crazy today with much angst and gritting of teeth due to people who are not actually 'your' children not buy you a gift, not buying the right card, buying the wrong gift etc etc

I didn't have my kids with me all day - the 3 hand made cards where enough for me - and knowing they would be back for a bed time cuddle

ClippedPhoenix · 10/03/2013 21:55

Valentines day has become a bit of a rip off so I can understand why on that score.

Mothers day thankfully is still what it should be.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 10/03/2013 21:59

YANBU but my reasons are very different to yours.

My mum died in 1995. I've been a mum for 7 years now. We always end up spending most of the day with DH's Mum - fair enough.

It's bittersweet and I'm happy it's nearly over for another year.

ClippedPhoenix · 10/03/2013 22:02

Take everything else out of the equasion. Celebrating being a mum is, for me, wonderful. Having my son appreciating me for being his mum is a double whammy really.

INeedThatForkOff · 10/03/2013 22:03

Yes it's been tiresome on here.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 10/03/2013 22:04

Yes Pheonix, I do love that side of things.

Like I say, bittersweet.

ClippedPhoenix · 10/03/2013 22:16

IwishIwasmoreorganised

I fee like you I guess on fathers day, I miss him very much and wish he was still here with me.

ClippedPhoenix · 10/03/2013 22:16

Feel by the way.
