AIBU to buy a new book for school rather than pay the fine for it.

DD brought a school reading book home last week but today I have been really distracted and youngest dd (13 months) got hold of it after dd left it on the couch and ate a big chunk of it. I know the school want £8 for a lost or destroyed book but the book to buy is only £2.50. So AIBU to just give her another one the only difference would be the lack of a pink sticker...

I would replace it. I fail to see how they can argue with that. I would have to check, but I think DS's school gives you the option. It's not fair to overcharge you.

I can't see how they can charge you £8 for a £2.50 book. Replacing it should be absolutely fine.

I expect the lost book charge is averaged out and includes the administration costs of the school buying a new one. It seems reasonable to just replace it.

YANBU replace the book.

ok good just checking! Im dreading telling the teacher the baby ate it...

You replacing it saves them the bother of doing it themselves.
If you're sure it's the same one, just buy it!
My school would be grateful.

I think they deliberately make it a 'too much' amount for the reason that parents will replace it cheaper.

Like a previous poster said, it saves them the hassle.

It's an interesting variation on 'my dog ate my homework' anyhow :o

And yes - I think replacing it should be fine - but beware they might still want some sort of monetary fine from you too if they have priced it to include an admin fee to stick labels on it, something to go towards the cost of replacing more expensive books if it's a flat fee and an element of punishment filling their coffers in there too... Not that I agree with that - just to beware what they might say!
