To think they should wear shoes inside school? Do yours?

DS managed to break his big toe yesterday in school when a shelf fell on it! Also a very nasty gash, I had to take him to a&e. I realise accidents happen, and the school was very apologetic etc etc.
I assumed he had his shoes on at the time, but have since discovered that he was just in his socks and that they are all in just their socks all day! I didn't know anything about this, and tbh think it's a stupid idea. What about when they go to the toilet? Not very hygienic in socks. Will take it up with school on Monday. Any advice, comments appreciated, thankyou

Are you in the UK? How old is he?

DioneTheDiabolist · 09/03/2013 17:09

My DS has to change from shoes to plimsoles when in school. Deffo better than having all the DCs sliding running around in their socks. I can't imagine that they provide much protection from falling shelves though.

desperateforaholiday · 09/03/2013 17:09

How odd, how old is your ds? My dc have always worn shoes in school, pumps for pe.

livinginwonderland · 09/03/2013 17:10

we always wore shoes unless it was for soft play. it is a bit weird to be in socks all day, though :/

WilsonFrickett · 09/03/2013 17:10

That does sound odd. Ours wear 'inside shoes' so plimsoles or rubbers for most, although the occasional child does wear slippers I think.

Sorry about the toe!

NynaevesSister · 09/03/2013 17:11

Shoes but would love the option of plimsoles when it gets really hot on the summer.

Shutupanddrive · 09/03/2013 17:12

Hi yes in UK, he is 7. He says its just his class as they have carpet? Hmm

In my school (Head), children change into indoor shoes. Usually plimmies or pumps. If I ever see them in socks, they are told in no uncertain terms to get something on. I think a shelf falling is a bit of a one off but generally, day to day, I'd worry about then standing on a staple or something.

ilovepowerhoop · 09/03/2013 17:13

ours change into indoor shoes-my 2 have trainers as they last longer than plimsolls

MushroomSoup · 09/03/2013 17:13

And we are fully carpeted throughout.

crashdoll · 09/03/2013 17:16

It sounds very odd. Indoor shoes are fine, no shoes are not.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/03/2013 17:18

Oh, the shoes thing. Drives me crazy.

Mine need 1) a pair of school shoes, which they wear to school and at breaktime 2) indoor shoes 3) a separate pair of pumps for indoor PE and then 4) trainers for outdoor PE.

I'm sure there's a way to have less shoes.

littlewhitebag · 09/03/2013 17:30

It used to drive me mad that i would buy fitted shoes at great expense for DC for school - then they had to wear cheap black plimsoles all day long. Just socks will probably be better for their feet.

louisianablue2000 · 09/03/2013 17:33

Sounds quite sensible TBH, far better for their feet to be in socks all day than having to wear stiff shoes.

I went to a school like this. I always used to forget to change and would come home in my indoor shoes.

catkind · 09/03/2013 17:38

I'd love it if my kids are allowed to wear just socks in school, so much healthier for foot growth. Falling shelves aside Shock Never mind what they wear on their feet, you would not be unreasonable to expect shelves to be fixed to the wall.

Shutupanddrive · 09/03/2013 17:46

What about going to the toilet? Also DS says they go for lunch in their socks and put shoes on before they go out to play!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/03/2013 17:47

Healthier for foot growth, but a bit minging when they go to the loo - especially the boys!

DCIlouisemonroe · 09/03/2013 17:51

I too hate spending a fortune on school shoes only to have my DCs wearing flimsy plimsolls for most of the day.

Plimsolls are not supportive and their feet sweat in them ,

Plus my DS keeps his until they are literally falling apart when he brings them home at the end of term they are always condemned.

freddiefrog · 09/03/2013 17:52

Mine have to take their shoes off. Either socks or slippers.

It has been fine.

The loos are checked and cleaned regularly throughout the day

mummytime · 09/03/2013 18:05

Well having taught secondary science, I just assume if the kids are wearing plimsolls or socks, they are not doing as much DT or Science as my kids do at Primary. Not enough protection as the OP pointed out.

(Even though I was guilty of wearing Sandals in the Lab at Uni, and am lucky not to have had a serious injury.)

Sorry but I think it's grim that children are expected to wear socks. It's not like padding around at home.

BackforGood · 09/03/2013 18:22

I think that's very wierd too.
All mine have always worn their shoes, as do all children in every school I've visited (and that's quite a lot).

FredFredGeorge · 09/03/2013 19:18

Euphemia So? what's so terrible about being outside in your socks?

Having feet not in shoes, or in very light, very roomy shoes is much better for them, so YABU. And steel toe capped shoes which might've actually protected the broken toe are very unlikely to be acceptable to the majority.
