to think that a Europe wide ban on pornography is nuts?

The European parliament is seeking a ban on all pornography across Europe.

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/european-parliament-votes-on-call-for-porn-ban-8527229.html

I don't think all pornography is bad and I think it serves as an outlet for both women and men to release anger/sexual frustration etc. I don't think a ban would be a good idea because there would always be ways around it and suppressing pornography would just result in more violence and sexual aggression imo. I also don't think there is anything inherently wrong in looking at naked photos of the opposite sex and satisfies a natural urge.

Sometimes I wonder what the EU is going to try and ban next on the grounds of protecting our rights?

the internet could be quite easy to regulate, those that say its not obviously know very little about how networks work and how it could be regulated.

i think it would be bad idea to ban it however i do think there needs to be stronger regulation around it

Kikithecat · 09/03/2013 12:43

Will the ban include Fifty Shades...?

Dawndonna · 09/03/2013 12:44

Calls on the EU and its member states to take concrete action on discrimination against women in advertising... [with] a ban on all forms of pornography in the media".
And your problem is?

LineRunner · 09/03/2013 12:48

I think the suggestion is now is that the ban affects pornographic advertising on the internet.

bingodiva "the internet could be quite easy to regulate, those that say its not obviously know very little about how networks work and how it could be regulated."

Please explain. I genuinely thought this was not possible as the Internet is not a discrete network?

Anger?

lljkk · 09/03/2013 13:12

YABU.

currentbuns · 09/03/2013 13:19

I never had any objections to porn (of the legal, non-violent sort) until I had two DD's. It worries me that it porn become so commonplace and easily accessible online - it undoubtedly perpetuates misogynistic and damaging stereotypes of women, particularly of young women, which are filtering into the mainstream. I hate the thought that my dd's and their friends might ever feel compelled to live up, on some level, to the 'ideals' presented by porn stars, but that does seem to be a very real possibility.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/03/2013 13:39

YABU, it sounds like an excellent idea to me. And if it's in fact what bandersnatch says, that sounds good too.

I will refrain from making the obvious joke about Nuts and the thread title.

This is seriously your opinion about porn ?? Confused

Porn as panacea for anger and sexual frustration ? So you think those people that take their anger and sexual frustration out on other people, if deprived of porn, will start rampaging around the streets and no man/woman would be safe ?

Fuck me, that is one scary viewpoint (censorship issues aside)

AF, it is deeply disconcerting when that first line comes up under your name in 'Threads I'm On'! Grin

LadyPessaryPam · 09/03/2013 14:35

It's just another attempt from the EU to get control of the internet, for our own good of course Hmm

bingodiva · 09/03/2013 14:36

itsallgoingtobefine - let me explain what i meant. in the UK for example the backbone for the internet is controlled by 2 or 3 big companies who also provide all the exnternal network carriers to external countries across oceans etc. and control the satellites. if those companies decide to regulate/filter everything out on their networks 99% of people in the UK would be affected. What this has done is regulate what people can see. yes you can get around some of it but not all of it but there are very few people who would be able to route the traffic to their PC to avoide these networks.

these measures would not regulate the internet but all traffic flowing into/out of the UK you will also find the 2 or 3 big companies in the UK control the backbone for a lot of other countries and would be able to implement the same measures elsewhere very easily.

LadyPessaryPam · 09/03/2013 14:39

Yes HillBilly76, that works really well Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/03/2013 14:40

I would like to see it banned, I doubt it would work though.

CoteDAzur · 09/03/2013 14:41

YANBU. Porn shouldn't be banned.

YABU about the "outlet for anger" bit, though.

Nonsense. All they need is a proxy that isn't linked to these big companies. It takes a few minutes of googling to find out how to do it, and you can bet your last penny that if this vicious piece of legislation came in then five minutes later there'd be ten bazillion proxy servers available.

these measures would not regulate the internet but all traffic flowing into/out of the UK you will also find the 2 or 3 big companies in the UK control the backbone for a lot of other countries and would be able to implement the same measures elsewhere very easily.

Backbone =/= internet. What are you talking about? DNS restrictions? Port restrictions?

It's far harder to do what you're describing than you think it is.
