AIBU to think that eating while on the toilet is inexcusable, especially if you have a guest?

I visited a friend earlier (I had to take the day off as DS was home 'sick' from school, so though we would pop round and see my friend) She invited us to come just before lunch and said she would make us someone to eat.

My friend suffers from suspected IBS and was suffering with an upset stomach, she was making trips to the toilet every 10 minutes or so.
we made lunch and sat down to eat but she still needed to make frequent trips to the toilet and in the end, after 5 trips and about 4 mouthfuls of food she picked up her plate and took it with her. When she came back 10 minutes later she had finished her lunch.

I was a bit shocked, I would never dream of eating while on the toilet.
I also suffer from a sensitive digestive system and have to avoid certain foods or I end up with an upset stomach and feeling rather ill, in that situation I couldn't imagine eating.

However, my friend seemed to think it was completely acceptable and when I told her how shocked I was she laughed and said she often eats meals on the toilet when she is suffering with an upset stomach, she spends so much time on the toilet that she needs to do other things while in there or nothing would ever get done.

AIBU to think there is just no excuse for ever eating while on the toilet.

Well unless you have chocolate and want to hide it from the DC, that is the only acceptable excuse.

She needs to revisit some boundaries.Because that is seriously gross.

She should also go back to the doctors and get a confirmed/proper diagnosis.Maybe then she can adapt life properly so she's not filling up and emptying out at the same time.gags

I used to have my first cup of coffee on the loo. But our bathroom was next to the kitchen and it was a convenient place to sit. I wasn't actually 'on the toilet' just using it as a convenient place to sit and contemplate the universe (whilst wondering what was up john humphries arse on radio 4 usually). Also have IBS - when I get a flare up I can only tolerate thin chicken soup, black tea and water and the last place I would consume that is the toilet after what happens in there during an attack! Would definitely not do this with guests (but then guests during an attack would be a no no due to my tendency to not wear bottoms at this time and being awful company).

That is just weird and why do you encourage her by having conversations with her sat on the loo. Doesn't the smell float through to you? I'd make my excuses and leave, also I wouldn't eat anything she's prepared.

I have never ever eaten or drunk anything whilst on the loo and find that v. odd, but I don't suffer from IBS, although just thinking about eating on the loo is making me a bit yuk!

She does not suffer the typical symptoms of IBS though, she says just just gets an urgent need to go to the toilet and has 'loose stool' she refers to it as having a runny bum, which i think is revolting She does not suffer with cramps or any of the other standard symptoms, which is why she finds it easy to carry on as 'normal' when she is suffering.

I used to know a lad who would make himself a cup of tea and a plate of sandwiches to take with him when he went for a crap. I never actually witnessed it but he talked about it as if it was completely normal.

I wouldn't eat on the loo but I do eat in the bath, is that weird?

She seriously needs to read up on poo particles. You are not supposed to even have your toothbrush exposed to them let alone your lunch. It might actually be causing some of her problems.

Dont start on poo particles, I now keep our toothbrushes in a plastic container thanks to MN and its bloody poo particles!

She doesnt have an ED (or if she does she is really bad at it)
She has had this condition for years, certain things she eats just trigger her needing to go the the toilet very often.

It is revolting but my mum has very severe IBS so her eating on the loo wouldnt be in the top ten worst things she may have to do.

Its like any chronic condition in that you dont really get it or understand the work arounds until you have suffered it.

She feels comfortable enough around you to do it, safe in the knowledge that you wont judge her for doing whatever she needs to do to deal with her condition. Seems she was wrong :(

Maybe I'm just common, but whilst it's not something I do much of myself, I can't see what the problem is.

This stuff about poo particles just sounds like clean freakery, I suspect unless your toilet has a decontamination airlock, poo particles travel elsewhere and get ingested by most people every day anyway.

Thats true, on mythbusters, they experiment with toothbrushes, and how far they have to be from the toilet to avoid the particles, every toothbrush had particles on it, even the one under a container in the kitchen.

I have IBS and when I have a flare up I don't feel like eating at all.

Urghhhhhhhh.

That will help me stick to my diet anyway. Every time I feel tempted to eat today, I'll just come back and read this thread again.
