DS is 15 months old and has conjuntivitis. Lots of sticky green goo and his left eye is very red

Seen the GP who has prescribed an antibiotic ointment which I am using along with bathing with cooled boiled water

Today I have noticed that he has a sort of white headed pimple in his left eye where it is very red and I am worried

Does anyone know if this is normal with conjuncivitis or if it needs looking at more urgently? Dr Google has worried me

TIA

Do you mean on his eyeball or just inside his eyelid on the red bit or near his eyelashes? Sounds like a stye - warm flannels should help draw it out and may burst like a spot. If it is on the eyelid I would try warm flannels and see GP next week if no better.

Hi

Sorry it is on his eyeball, in the white part about 5mm from the tear duct

When dif you start antibiotics? did he take a swab of the green goo? At 15months they can't tell you very much ie. pain, blurred vision etc., I would personally get it looked at again today, I always think if its really playing on your mind its best to get it reviewed, especially if its something like an eye. (I'm a midwife though, not a paed or eyeball nurse)

Idocrazythings · 08/03/2013 18:15

Also in the meantime make sure you are cleaning the eye from the inside to the outside ie. wiping away towards the ear, and one wipe, discard tissue, fresh wipe? till you're done.

If this was my child, I'd be going to the GP, out of hours centre or a&e straight away.

What you describe could be a foreign body in the eyeball, maybe this was the cause of the conjunctivitis. Your babies eyesight is too precious to take chances with - it may be nothing at all, but it needs to be looked at by a doctor to rule out the chance that something has got stuck in the eye and is now causing infection.

Better safe than sorry! Also our local a&e has a fast track (real emergencies permitting) and will see young children before "walking wounded" adults where possible, I don't know if this is usual practice though.

catgirl1976 · 08/03/2013 18:41

Right, I will take him to the walk in

Thanks everyone

Obviously I can't see it and don't have much experience in eyeballs but if you've had 24 hours of antibiotics and no improvement or a deteriation even; then I'd go. If its bad you'll get triaged and go through quite quickly and if they say its ok at least you'll have peace of mind.

iloveholidays · 08/03/2013 18:42

I'd give nhs direct a call... They will get you through to out of hours gp if necessary and hopefully less waiting around than a and e.

Good luck!

Idocrazythings · 08/03/2013 18:43

X post. I'm relieved you're going. Good luck Smile

SCOTCHandWRY · 08/03/2013 18:53

I would be tempted to find an eye hospital if there was any near you. Gps dont always know about eyes (in my opinion!)

catgirl1976 · 09/03/2013 11:09

If it hasn't gone by Monday I will do that

Great, let us know how you get on xxxxx

bakingaddict · 09/03/2013 11:37

A lot of conjunctivitis actually has a viral origin so AB's wont be of any use, me and DD had acute conjunctivitis last year. My eyes eventually cleared in 2 weeks and DD's after a week but our eyes were hideous to look at.

Did your GP or HCP at the walk in center actually examine the eye. It may well be a eyelash follicle that has become distorted due to inflammation, pus or bacterial/viral replication
