To think BT Infinity is rubbish and mis-sold

After a big PITA getting BT Infinity installed including 6 engineer visits I had to be home for (and hours and hours on the phone to them) they are telling me that the hi speed is only available on a wired connection not wireless. Wireless gets 14Mps and wired is 38Mps.

They don't mention this at point of sale, I don't know anyone that uses a wired connection these days.

Is this rubbish or just me?

FWIW I would tell anyone NOT to get it, you will not notice any difference at all from normal broadband. After all the hassle I cannot wait for the 12 month contract to end.

I had a nightmare getting Infinity installed. But I have just done a test, and I have 22 Mb Download speed. Dh says this is good and a lot better than what we were getting before.

PLUS, in our postcode, no one, not Virgin or anyone, can match anywhere near that. so .........

14 Mps is still good though and yes, wireless will make a difference with any broadband connection unless you get a signal booster.

I have BtInfinity and it took a while to settle (a few weeks). Just upgraded to superfast! Now getting 38Mps wireless. It's quite steady and very rarely dips.

YANBU. I hate and loathe anything to do with BT. I had real problems with them a few years ago. An issue with a crossed line took months and months to resolve. They then sent bills to an address completely unrelated to me, then wrecked my credit score when I didn't pay the bills I didn't even know existed and where for calls not even made by me. The issue was eventually resolved when I contacted the chief executives office and they sent me a bunch of flowers, but it didn't make up for all the unnecessary stress caused by their incompetence.

They now address all our correspondence to a house that doesn't even exist, but luckily the postman knows this and brings the letters to us anyway. (I don't know what will happen when he retires)

Wireless speed varies an awful lot depending on circumstances. I think the BT Home Hub can support up to 300Mbps on wireless in theory at least, although you'd need an appropriate 802.11n WiFi adaptor in your computer that also supports up to 300Mbps plus be sitting practically on top of it. I've got a (non-BT) wireless setup and my laptop is currently connecting at 216Mbps. I'm about 4m away from the router.

If you don't have an 802.11n wireless adaptor in your PC then you may be limited to a top speed of only 54Mbps and, again, that can reduce quite significantly if you are any distance from the Home Hub. Interference from neighbouring wireless signals can also have a significant effect.

With a wired connection these kinds of issues go away. You'll get a solid 100Mbps connection from your computer to the Home Hub and (as long as the cable is of half-decent quality) it'll do it over 90 metres and without issues of interference. So BT can say with confidence that you'd get your maximum speed available over a wired connection. Over wireless, they can't guarantee the wireless connection will be as fast as the broadband connection because there are so many things that can mess it up.

All the engineers we had were cowboys and we also had not internet at all for nearly a month waiting for the cowboys to come back!

Theres no reason these days why you cant achieve 38Mbps on a wireless connection.

We have BT infinity.

For months I was at a loss as to why my internet became shit even slower than it was before the upgrade. After many phone discussions and a BT engineer, it eventually transpired that as the router was in a different room to the old router simply moving the router to a different room of the house solved the problem instantly. Try moving it around the house?

Had BT Infinity for about 18 months in spite of regarding BT as total and utter scum from previous experiences. Reliable (tempting fate) 38 meg, no issues.

Mine is 75mb download on wi-fi, 20 upload.

I haven't wired anything in to see if it's faster, but the wireless is definitely fast enough.

I've had infinity 2 for nearly 2 years and we get 40 Mbps wireless ,it's way better than the Internet we had before and we have a really good deal .

Don't believe them, my connection was shocking and I had several engineers out.

I'd had enough and emailed their CEO Gavin Patterson. He emailed me back to say he'd passed it to his team.

Phone call from them next day and they sent out a 'specialist' engineer. He was very good and worked out there was a fault with the fibre connection miles away. It was fixed and I got the promised connection!

Email him his email is easy to find on Google, his team were also very good.

Yes, mine says it has amazing speeds, however, it still takes yonks for an Internet page to load and every night when I FaceTime my DP we get about 2 minutes of good connection, followed by gradually worsening quality, eventually stalling and cutting off after about 5 minutes. Netflix is ok but Amazon TV stalls and buffers something terrible. Sometimes I have to make my DCs turn off their laptops while I'm doing the online shop or it takes forever to load a page.

Just shit really. I only went with BT as Sky said they couldn't do fibre in my area, but BT's fibre is crap.

i'd love 14mbps.....we get between 2 and 4 and we're still not sure if our village is going to get the infinity package. The village 2 miles up the road is though...

Everyone I know has their desktops and consoles on wired connections. Wireless is for mobile devices IMO. And I only know gamers/hardcore downloaders to have fast connections - bit curious as to what you would need it for otherwise?

If you're finding pages loading slowly and streaming is buffering or defaulting to low quality, go to www.speedtest.net and do a speed test. If you're not getting your advertised speed then something is going wrong.

Just noticed half of this thread is two years old. We have noticed great improvements in Skype calling over the last two years. It used to cut out all the time and freeze up but it seems much better now.

We have BT Infinity in Essex. It is brilliant! We can both stream different things at the same time with no problems. We can have lots of people connected at the same time when family visit. The speed is fantastic. We have not had any problems at all EXCEPT the home hub is rubbish. I eventually bought a new high end router after having to reboot the router every other day, no problems since.
