to not expect Clarks to try to sell ex-display shoes at full price?

Was in Clarks a couple of days ago trying to get shoes for DS (aged 2y3m).

Saw a style I liked, so got feet measured, lady tried them on him, they fitted. Noticed that one of the shoes was really scuffed compared to the other - the suede felt much rougher, and was darker in colour, and there was a big crease across the front.

I asked her if they had another pair in the same size as it was obviously the shoe that had been out on display. Unfortunately they didn't have any more.

I was ready to leave it and try another shop, and she offered to ask her manager if they could get me a discount on them. Wasn't sure, the offer surprised me, but DS was starting to run off so quickly said oh ok, thank you... on my way to round him up.

Anyway, manager said she couldn't give a discount. I think she genuinely just thought I would accept them as they were, which surprised me.

Do they really expect people to pay £32 for a pair of kids' shoes, when they are in this condition? I wouldn't expect an adult to accept them, so why is it ok for kids? I mean I know they can wear out their shoes quickly, so I'd rather start out with a decent pair.

I don't have a lot of money, but I thought I was paying extra for good quality at Clarks. Anyway, I didn't buy them, of course.

Where else should I try? And am I being unreasonable? Am 36 weeks pregnant and feel like I get unreasonable about quite a few things! But this annoyed me... they must have thought they could just sell a sub-standard pair of shoes to me for full price and I'd say ok to it.

YABU if they are in perfect condition.

YANBU if they are not - just like any item you buy from a shop. Ex-display isn't the issue, but being imperfect is. I would have asked for a discount too.

YANBU
Next knocked a chunk off a leather belt which had clearly either been worn and returned or used in a display.

I suspect my Pinkalos (sp) boots are x display, one is very faintly faded, but you need to look very carefully. However, they were half price in a big shoe warehouse.

YANBU in those circumstances, and it's seems bad practice by the manager.

My mum got a pair of ex display shoes from Clarkes for £6 because one was faded by sunlight, she simply put the 'new' one on the window sill for a week and now has a matching pair (that look far better faded than they did as new).

YANBU in this circumstance.
anything that is less than perfect should be sold at a discount, even if it's a small discount.
