To be really pissed off that when I google goldilocks or little red riding hood costumes I am inundated with big boobs with short skirts

I am looking at costumes for dd for WBD and am getting increasingly pissed off at why children's female book characters are being sexualised for adult costumes.

If you press on images and google "Cinderella costume" the third pic is of a woman wearing a half boob tube corset type thing with a tiny sliver of a skirt and netted tights. If you google "goldilocks costume" you get a woman with a low cut corset type dress and white stockings.

This has really pissed me off. I'm looking for a costume for my five year old ffs. Why are children's characters being sexualised in this way? Who the hell likes this shit and who buys it?

I'm on the look for an (adult) Disney Princess costume for myself for a trip to DLP. I know I'm hot and stuff but surely no-one wants to see my arse hanging out at Disneyland FFS

Make your costumes people, make make make! Like not sew make but put together. I hate shop bought fancy dress, especially for world book day. It's not difficult to chuck something together is it?

I went into a fancy dress shop this morning to get some cat ears for DD's costume and was immediately confronted with pictures of half naked "sexy" nurses, policewomen, and yes women dressed as "sexy" cats.

Decided not to give them my money for kids' cat ears, am making ears myself now.

kinky - Disney won't let adults in dressed up as characters, unless it's a special event where they have invited adults to dress up. I don't know how or why I know this BTW.

I agree, very annoying. I was an elf in the grotto at the Christmas Fete one year and had to get an adult elf costume. Difficult to find one that was not, rather too risque for a school setting, shall we say.

sock my DD has that costume. She was Cinderella in the school panto last year, aged 12 and most of what was available was very unsuitable.

It's a size 10 and quite stretchy - happy to lend it in return for photos of you in Waitrose

Sorry MrsKeith, unless it's very, very simple I'd rather poke my eyes out than make a fancy dress costume. When DD1 was a star in the nursery Nativity play, I bought a star tabard for £5 from Asda. I couldn't have made one for that price.

Yy, make the stuff! I can't wait until the first time DD's nursery asks us to put her in fancy dress. She's nearly 1 and has only been at nursery since Jan - will it be soon?

I make all my own costumes or borrow bits from friends. Last Halloween I was Alice in Wonderland, complete with 8-month-old DD as the Cheshire Cat. I spent blimming ages sewing pink fur stripes onto a lilac babygro and trying to add ears to a lilac hat. The year before I was pg and went as Ursula from The Little Mermaid. I used a cheap black strapless maxi dress and attached home-made tentacles to the skirt, painted my face, chest and arms blue and sprayed my hair white. The tentacles took ages and with hindsight making them authentically black on top, purple underneath and with holes cut out to show pale pink lining (suckers) was a step too far.

For World Book Day I probably wouldn't buy or make anything new anyway, I just steer DD1 towards a character that could use dressing up clothes we already had or their own clothes, with a few embellishments.

Those saying make your costumes, you seem to be assuming that I have a creative bone in my body. I don't. If I can buy something that looks like what it's supposed to be, then that's what I'll do, because a) what I make will look like shit and b) the time taken to make a costume is worth more to me than the money (because I buy cheap and cheerful)

I used to think it is better to make outfits too. Now I think differently however. The price of the shop bought ones is often less than the cost of materials you would need to make them, and shop bought ones are designed to be more comfortable, making them a more practical choice when the child will spend the whole school day in costume.

One poor child in my DC's class always has a costume made for him, as his mum is very arty. She doesn't seem to consider he will be hot in class in an outfit made head to toe in fur. He has also come out in an allergic reaction to one of her 'creations'. He does win the prize as a rule, but if ever boy was crying out to be Spiderman with all his mates it is that boy. I think maybe she does take the home made costume to the extreme though, to be fair.

Mrskeith, we can't all be imaginative or give that big a shit about WBD like you. I'd rather buy something than "put stuff together". As it happens I'm making my own wicker basket for dd to hold. Some of us don't have time to MAKE the costume as well. I don't want my dd to think that "winning prizes" is the only thing that counts. She wins most school contests anyway, so missing out on this one won't be too heart breaking.
Hope you have a splendid time "putting together" your costume and using your "imagination". .

I don't mean spending hours or loads of money sewing from scratch. We done a lego man for last halloween, that was ace and pretty easy really, we done Where's Wally for school last book day, just got a stripey top from a charity, glasses from the pound shop and we even found a walking stick! I mean just putting together, improvising, using your imagination. I love it!

That's what I mean filly, this year we're doing Burglar Bill, really easy as he already has a black and white striped T shirt and the rest is easily sourced/improvised. I won't be sewing a thing!

Oh don't get me started on Superheros on World Book Day - it doesn't count!

I've relaxed my standards these days and so anything 'counts' on these fancy dress days, there are too many of them to get too bogged down in what is right or wrong on each one of them.

This attitude has served me well. DD2 had to dress up as what she wanted to be when she grew up one day. I had a doctor's outfit so told her she wanted to be a doctor. Now she actually wants to be a doctor when she grows up. I've done wonders for her ambition with my laziness.

Our school dropped a 'Circus dress up' on us with very little notice as fucking usual so a boiler suit and a crash helmet were put on him and he was called a human cannon ball!

In fact I'll keep the human cannonball in mind for a 'What you want to be when you grow up' day!

I'm glad dd1 didn't go to a school where they have a lot of dress up days. WBD we usually got around by sticking a halloween witch outfit on her and then thinking about which witch she was based on the books that were age appropriate. She has been Meg from Meg and Mog, Winnie the Witch, and Hermione from Harry Potter. It's amazing how many witches there are in children's literature
