AIBU to think that shoes should always come with half sizes available?

Just wondering whether I'm being unreasonable or not in thinking that shoes should always have half sizes available in all styles?

I was browsing a well know department store website and they only appear to do ladies footwear in full sizes.

Sometimes wearing an insole or a heel-grip or both just doesn't work (if the shoes are sizing too big) so that half size is just what is needed.

YANBU to want choice. YABU to expect every shoe manufacturer to cater for every size and width out there... though it would be nice if they did!

I have slightly different sized feet yet I have to buy pairs, it is frustrating but I can't expect stores to allow me to get a 6.5 for a left and a 7 for a right.

YANBU to find it annoying!

Tee2072 · 04/03/2013 10:07

YABU

My feet are 4.5. Good luck finding that...

andubelievedthat · 04/03/2013 10:08

so agree with you ,yes.

LeaveTheBastid · 04/03/2013 10:09

It just wouldn't be cost effective would it, to make an extra set of shoes for every in between size, when its quite rare that people need them. It varies from shoe to shoe too, I have one pair of heels that need insoles and could maybe benefit from being half a size smaller. But one pair out of many doesn't make me feel all shoes should have half sizes.

YABU Wink

jidelgin · 04/03/2013 10:14

YANBU my feet would be much happier were that the case!

Trills · 04/03/2013 10:19

YANBU to want it

YABU to expect it

A shoe manufacturer that did this would have much higher costs and only marginally higher sales, because most people manage fine with full sizes and not many would seek out that manufacturer just to get the half sizes.

I was only thinking about my children's feet the other day and hoping for their sake that they stop growing as a whole size for ease of shoe-buying.

Then I thought again and realised in this advent of 3D printing it may not matter in the future.

It doesn't help us now though, I feel your pain as I have 2 1/2 sizes different between my feet and the short one is clawed up and wide.

Tee2072 · 04/03/2013 10:22

They manage to make it cost effective in the US....

Mintyy · 04/03/2013 10:23

Yanbu. My feet are 4.5. Most of my shoes are slightly too large. I suppose those whose feet are an exact size don't have much understanding of how annoying this is.

TheFallenNinja · 04/03/2013 10:27

Sure. All shoe shops could double their inventory overnight.

Mintyy · 04/03/2013 11:11

Well, no, not overnight.

Some shops can manage it.

milktraylady · 04/03/2013 11:11

Yes it is annoying.
I can now only shop in Clarks as they do half sizes. Luckily quite nice shoes, though expensive.

Panzee · 04/03/2013 11:15

You could get them hand made...

Fakebook · 04/03/2013 11:15

Clarks do half sizes and I think Next do them too, but their shoes are a bit shit.

Trills · 04/03/2013 11:16

I find that different brands come out different even when they say they are the same size, so I can imagine that if you feel that you need a 4.5 in Clarks (4 is too small, 5 is too large) you might find that a 5 in Office fits you perfectly.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 04/03/2013 11:17

TheFallenNinja I'm not talking about stores that have limited stockroom space.

The way I see it is that most high-street shops or department stores have an on-line presence too so if they can't have the footwear in half sizes for sale in their shops, couldn't they offer them for sale on-line instead? That way, as a consumer you could visit their store, try on the whole size shoe and if you know a half size will fit, buy it from their on-line store instead?
1 - the shop wins as you're still buying from them
2 - you win as you're getting footwear that actually fits your feet.

Should I go on Dragons Den with that suggestion?? Smile

It's part of the reason I shop Clarks, Whatcha. You can order shoes to be delivered to the store and go and try them on and then only pay for them if they fit and you like them.

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 04/03/2013 11:33

i am anywhere from a size 5.5 to a 7 depending on style and shop... bit like clothes really. can never find a perfect size

thenightsky · 04/03/2013 11:34

Bloody hell aldiwhore where do you live? I'm your mirror image (6.5 on right foot and 7 on left). Can we shoe share??? Shock

soontobeburns · 04/03/2013 11:45

BHS and marks and Spencer do half sizes too.

itsallyourownfault · 04/03/2013 11:47

YANBU. Would save us all from bunion hell in later life!

Birdsgottafly · 04/03/2013 12:36

I used to be able to get shoes from Next that fitted, as most of their summer styles had half sizing, the range has got increasingly smaller every year.

M&S shoes have been ok, the last three years, a lot better than their clothes, in the half size range.

mrsjay · 04/03/2013 12:40

you used to be able to get half sizes though but they seemed to have vanished, Im a girls 2.5 Blush a 3 is to big and a 2 is a bit tight it is really annoying yanbu

Lollydaydream · 04/03/2013 12:48

YANBU it is infuriating and crippling.I have wasted ££s on ill fitting shoes. :(

Rosa · 04/03/2013 12:58

The Europeans do it and seeing that many Uk shoes are 'made in Italy' then the Uk shoe importers could easily manage it.... Every size is the same as a half size in the Uk ( roughly).
