to have a go at M&S about their toys?

I was in M&S looking at toys with ds - whilst they've got some lovely stuff, the gender stereotyping is appalling. A whole row of pink glittery fairy stuff and then the grey/brown "boys' stuff" (their label) - OK, so that's like most toy departments, but some of the stuff labelled "boys' stuff" is really not boy-specific at all - like these cats. Why on earth do they need to be labelled as a boys' toy? WIBU to drop them an email and point out that this approach to toy labelling hardly makes them out to be a modern, forward-thinking store...

Yanbu. My dd would love those animals. Then again neither she nor I would be put off them based on the fact they say Boys Toys on them.Yet. She is only 1.4 so theres time.for her to feel stereotypig pressure.

Definetly worth an email. And id suggest putting the address you are sending too on here so others can do the same.

YANBU - why are they boys stuff???

Catmint · 03/03/2013 20:53

There is a campaign about this called let toys be toys. I don't know how to do linking on this but do search for it. It has covered m and s several times. Let toys be toys is on fb. Hth

Thanks for the link. I have emailed M&S about the toys, using this link. I also had a go at them at the same time about the fact that their "breastfeeding room" in the Manchester store also doubles up as the baby change area...I'm on a roll tonight Grin

YANBU - it's so depressing the way they try to create a segmented market where it doesn't even exist - to our children's cost. Angry
The Let Toys Be Toys campaign has a petition to retailers.

WafflyVersatile · 03/03/2013 21:12

I think we all need to be putting pressure on retailers and manufacturers not to 'gender' toys like this. There is quite enough social pressure to channel girls and boys one way or the other without shops pointing out which ones we should be getting.

Also not having all housework related toys to be pink. Grr.

I stopped buying M&S toys when I saw a toy kettle and iron called "Mummy and me". WTAF and this wasn't that long ago!

M and S toys have risen in price and arent worth it anyway IMHO Grin
