To feel scared in my own home?

We have just discovered that someone, in the last couple of weeks has got into our garden and cut up some stuff of the dogs.
There were no sharp implements in the garden they could have used so must have brought scissors or knife or something into our garden.
DH is all for additional locks and security but I just feel really shaken- we only discovered this about 1/2 and hour ago.

Is there no other explanation for this?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 02/03/2013 19:13

This is so weird. Our dogs (temporary) tether was cut the other night.

We have replaced it but we are also very spooked.

Fairypants · 02/03/2013 19:16

It's been too cold to spend any time on the garden - even dd's aren't interested.
Dd1 takes ddog out to play sometimes but it was clearly not her as she is scared to. Also, obviously cut not chewed or broken in any other accidental way.
:(

foxes, their teeth are so sharp that it can look like scissors have been at something

Fairypants · 02/03/2013 19:17

That is weird wannabe - it was his tether and a ball on string toy that got cut!!!

This happens all the time to us if anything gets accidentally left in the garden, shoes, anything leather, electrical cable.. and it is definitely the foxes as I have seen them doing it.

Fairypants · 02/03/2013 19:18

The toy string is 3 ply rope so I think it would break differently if it wasn't just one cut iyswim

Our dog didnt bark. Which isnt good. No bark means he was properly angry and probably growling.

Its very odd. Why would foxes want to chew through a tether?

I know some people steal dogs. Are your dogs valuable?

Fairypants · 02/03/2013 19:28

He's a rescue crossbreed so not valuable but it happened when he wasn't out there anyway we know it must have been in the last couple of weeks cos we know the last time we used the teather 19th feb and it wasn't broken.

Also vote foxes ... i saw one bugger bite my hose in half...... thet have very very sharp teeth it looked like a knife cut

squeakytoy · 02/03/2013 19:35

honestly, foxes love destroying stuff, especially if the scent of the animal or human is on it. My ugg flip flops were a recent casualty as I didnt notice the dog take one out side.. they are now just flip with no flop... Hmm

squeakytoy · 02/03/2013 19:36

Please dont say that you go out and leave your dog tethered and unattended though. :(

mrsbunnylove · 02/03/2013 19:39

the fox will think a loose wire is a hazard that might trap them and so they'll remove it. rabbits do it. never let a rabbit near your phone. i've had to have three phones and four vacuums since i got my rabbits.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 02/03/2013 19:40

Hmm who said we go out and leave him unattended? I said we didnt hear him bark which implies we were in the house!

He lives outside. He goes into his house if we are out for a long period. I am always at home anyway.

Mamf74 · 02/03/2013 19:48

I'd also vote fox; we live in an urban area over run by them and my PiL often stay in a caravan park down the road - there are signs all around the park warning people not to leaves shoes or balls etc outside the caravans as foxes will destroy them. There have also been reports of awning ropes being chewed through, these are tough weatherproof nylon guy ropes but still get wrecked.

The worst are the teeny pups when they are teething, anything is fair game then.

Iseeall · 02/03/2013 19:59

I agree it is probably foxes. Ruined a a small trampolene here. Very sharp teeth and boy can they jump up and over fences, so they will get in your garden.

Fairypants · 02/03/2013 22:01

I don't doubt that foxes can wreck things but it really looks like a cut as it is not frayed in any way and is very thick- we tried to cut it with kitchen scissors and had to wear away at it for a bit to get through all the layers. I've tried to google fox damage but there isn't anything that suggests they are capable of doing the exact sort if damage we can see without any additional bite marks or damage.
I'd like it to be foxes but I think the cut would be messier if it were. :(
