if you ever complain they are feeding loads - someone will ALWAYS say that they have a growth spurt at that age.

Oh yes, my 'baby' is a teenager and that's certainly true for him! :)

nickelbabe · 02/03/2013 16:12

but it's true.

it's really not a myth.

Not all babies have growth spurts at the same time, and it's well known that children will eat loads before they're due a growth spurt (and it doesn't have to be physical, it can be developmental too - last week, DD was feeding almost constantly, despite eating normal food too, and after a couple of days, she stopped and was suddenly a lot more advanced than before. it was really freaky)

Have you ever read Wonder Weeks? I haven't ever seen someone say "oh there's a growth spurt at that age" for a random age. Every time someone's suggested it, it's been at a "known" spurt age.

DS treats those spurts like frigging milestones.

lljkk · 02/03/2013 16:30

I'm not sure if I have ever noticed any of DC ever have a growth spurt. Maybe when DC1 was about 15 months old. Then again, maybe not.
He's 13yo now & still not eating huge amounts. Or maybe my frame of reference is distorted by how much me & DH eat (lots).

Booboostoo · 02/03/2013 17:33

DD's growth spurts are really really evident. She goes all round and plump, before she goes all lean and tall. When she was EBF you knew a growth spurt was coming because she would spend a day or two priming me up for the big consumption!

TheChaoGoesMu · 02/03/2013 17:41

Thats because its usually true.

thebody · 02/03/2013 17:48

Oldest ds went plump at 10 from being skinny and then grew 6 inches and 4 foot sizes in 6 months. Quite freaky. He's now a 6 foot 2 and a slim 23 year old.

The one that gets me....... If they are ever grouchy (even one teeny whimper) "she's teething" from 2 months until now (23mo) she seems never to have been able to have been upset for any other reason than teething! It's like the baby equivalent of a woman never being able to have a stomach ache without someone saying "is it that time?" Grrrrrr

yaimee · 02/03/2013 23:37

I think it's just a way of reassuring themselves/you that it's just a phase and will pass soon.

GregBishopsBottomBitch · 02/03/2013 23:54

You can always tell when my 14 yr old nephew is ready for a growth spurt, he gets chubby then suddenly grows, hes about 5 foot 10 already.

SirBoobAlot · 03/03/2013 00:26

Thing is the first year (well, two years) are dotted with growth spurts, development spurts, and sleep regressions. It's well documented, so if your baby is unsettled, and around one of those points in time, then it's more than likely the reason.

nickelbabe · 03/03/2013 18:09

mrmonkey yy - dd's redcheeks are because she's just napping in my arms - you saw her there!
dd's grouchy and red because she's got mad eczema!

but no, it's always frigging teething!
