To want to change career?

I graduated from university 8 years ago with a 2:1 in Economics. I have since worked as an Administrator in different organisations. Before having children the jobs I had were okayish, some responsibility like events management, budgets, helping with payroll etc. but was just drifting along as I did not know what I wanted to do. Now I have a 3 year old and a 6 month old and am currently on maternity leave which ends in 1 months time. Since having my 3 year old I have worked in an easy admin job for 3 hours per day (9-12) while my sister who has no children but works 2pm-10pm looked after my DD. I am supposed to be going back to my admin job in a month, DD will go to nursery now 8.00am - 1.00pm 3 days a week and the youngest to my sister for just over 3 hours a day and DD will join him on the other 2 days she is not at nursery. It works ok financially as I do not have to pay much child care but still only bring in minimum wage at 15 hours a week. I am so bored in this job and wish I had done something with my degree, or even better done a degree in teaching or midwifery or something worthwhile. What are my options after doing admin for 8 years? I really do not want to work in admin any longer but feel unreasonable wanting to change career as it means my children would have to go into childcare for longer hours where as they are happy with how things are at the moment, and I would have to pay if I did another degree therefore not contributing anything to the family just taking out instead. I'm so confused.

it's much easier to get a job when you have a job, iyswim. I wouldn't chuck it until you have a plan of action for what to do next.

Also much easier to career change when you have fresh work experience to point to.

Could you get a PGCE, would that appeal? Can mean long hours, though (see "Is teaching a family-friendly career?" thread. Better yet, if you could get PGCE & then a lecturer job in a 6th form college, but you need to be in a big urban area to feel confident of getting work.

What about NVQ to become a TA, and if you enjoyed that move onto teaching later? I know a fair few who've done that.
