Don't schools get extra funding for each SEN child? I know at my ds school they were pushing to put quite a few kids into SEN within the first 2 months of reception! Seemed mad to me as they didn't even know the kids very well and starting school is going to be character changing at the best of times. My friend whose child is being assessed for SEN was told that the school needs SEN kids because of the funding issue.

It was just so sad reading it and how ignoran and uneducated some are

DONT put yourself through it. we all know the world is full of bigoted cunts. Jesus go to some less developed countires and see how albinos/disabled/gay and lower caste people are treated. breaks anyones hearts

But I think when you are sensitive about SN to read the DM and then get upset and then bemoan it here is frankly misguided and masochistic

why bother?

JakeBullet · 01/03/2013 16:13

Bella, my son has a Statement of SEN because he is autistic. As such the school get extra funding to pay for his one to one helper. Prior to this though they funded it out of school budget.....don't think they got any extra funding until the elusive Statement was finally agreed.

I don't think SEN are overdiagnosed.

But you wouldn't expect numbers to be consistent across countries anyway. A dyslexic child who's trying to cope with English is likely to struggle (and be identified) much more than a child coping with a language that's easier for dyslexics. That's just one obvious issue, but I would bet there are others.

BoneyBackJefferson · 01/03/2013 17:08

Most people don't realise that gifted and talented is SEN.

The snap schools here is a dump, really it makes me want to cry. The facilities are crap, it hasn't had money put into it for years, they applied for a new school when the grants were being handed out but were turned down despite the fact its far too small and not fit for purpose.

Two new primary schools were built and a huge new academy, all with state of the art facilities for pupils with special needs, other schools got grants to improve facilities for sn pupils, my friend visited and it made her want to cry when she compared the amazing facilities at the mainstream secondary school with our sn school. The reason to us is pretty clear, our kids aren't worth the investment, sn kids are seen as the lowest of the low, why put money into them if they probably won't ever work and of they do it Will be in a low paid job and they'll still be costing the state.

Really, I think purpose kids school, which is an ex old peoples home and not fit for purpose, which hasn't had any money put into it, with its drab concrete playground and the tiny hall pretty much sums up the attitude towards people with severe learning difficulties in this country and I think it bleddy stinks.

They are shockingly ignorant on there, but basically you can't change your mind so best not to read the comments.

The only way they would learn is to actually have a child with SN I think.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/03/2013 17:36

you can't change *their

pigletmania · 01/03/2013 17:51

I know Fanjo I just read them again, sn is the parents fault, beat the sn out of them, that will teach em, lazy Badly behaved kids never happened 50 years ago. Gd the list goes on, can't believe te number of nasty uneducated individuals there are. ADHD is the parents fault, those feckless parents. We have moved forward and are recognising that some children do have extra needs and to cater or tem so that tey can access an education.
