To have fed dd curry

LeftLuggage · 01/03/2013 11:38

DD is three weeks off her first bday. The other night I made a curry (well biryani) that was really nice so i decided to give her it for dinner last night mixed with a good bit of yogurt. I didn't add any salt but the paste (pataks I think) had quite a bit of salt in it. I used about half a jar to make three adult portions and about four baby portions.

I also added a bit of extra spice but still v mild

Anyway she normally sleeps through but was up all night farting and downed two extra bottles at 930pm and midnight!! She was really thirsty this morning too. Have I poisoned her? Is it the salt?? I had some too last night and was also quite thirsty. How much salt is even in those curry pastes??

I have frozen the rest...do I risk giving it to her again (she really loved it)

DH is asian. We fed our kids curry from a young age, obviously trying to minimise or eliminate the salt involved. I don't use the paste so can't comment but I would have thought if you had served her bolognaise or something made with packet ingrediants as a once of it would have had salt in and you wouldn't be worried you had poisoned anybody!

WilsonFrickett · 01/03/2013 11:44

Half a jar between - what, three adult and four baby, so say half a jar between 5 portions can't really be that much. One tenth of the salt of the whole jar, IYSWIM. How much can that really be?

FireOverBabylon · 01/03/2013 11:52

You have a baby who loved curry. Be grateful that she likes it and feed it to her again, she'll be fine she might not like it next time and almost certainly won't by the time she's two

Bitter, me?

seekingpeaceandquiet · 01/03/2013 11:56

DD is now 3 and has loved curry since she was one.
Give her some if she'll eat it again she'll be fine.

IsItMeOr · 01/03/2013 11:57

OP - Waitrose organic curry powder is salt and chilli free, so good for making guilt free mild curries. We used to add garlic and ginger and then fry it all up with oil before adding onion, tin of chopped tomatoes and whatever vegetables, beans/pulses, chunks of chicken/prawns we fancied.

Fire I think DS did go off it after a while, like you say. We definitely stopped making it, although that might have been because of the mess he made with the rice... he's almost 4 now, so we just use patak's jar and coconut milk. Yummy :)

ds is 7 months and has curry when I make it that'll be every week then

as other posters have said, you could approximate the amount of salt if it is bothering you.

the wya I see it is - my dc don't have large amounts of salt in most of their meals, so the odd one with salt in is ok.

I haven't even checked the list of the paste I use - hadn't even occurred to me to do so. there is so much other stuff in there to dilute it all down, and then ds' portion is so small anyway, that it must be a tiny amoutn.

My DD ate curry & chilli at least once a week at her nursery & I was really glad they had such a varied menu. I think the more tastes they have from an early stage the better.

Plus, children in Indian sub-continent & SE Asia would eat spiced food as "normal", so don't worry!

Mononoke · 01/03/2013 12:05

It's fine, I used to do the watering it down with yoghurt thing too.
I doubt there would have been that much salt in it and as others have said its not like you do it every day.

ButteryJam · 01/03/2013 12:07

I was given curry since I was 6 months old and have turned out fine :)

Poppet48 · 01/03/2013 12:10

My DS loves chilli noodles and mild spices, I love it because it means that he eats a large variety of foods.

It makes DS thirsty but that a not a bad thing at all as it makes him drink loads and his eczema improves when he drinks more.

So, YANBU to feed your DD 'Spicy food' It's brilliant for me and DS Smile

notso · 01/03/2013 12:19

Curry is one of the only foods I can guarantee DS2 2.2 will eat, he loves it. Jamie Olivers Ministry of Food has some easy curry paste recipes in it so you could regulate the salt, however I tend to be more cautious about hidden salt rather than added salt.

Flobbadobs · 01/03/2013 12:23

DD loves curry, even slightly spicey flavours but after the last time I will be damned if I'm giving it to her again until she's old enough to go to the toilet and wipe her own bum and spray the air freshener.
The memory of that nappy will stay with me for a long time. She likes curry but apparently it doesn't much like her...

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 01/03/2013 12:25

I doubt the amount of salt in the small portion she ate would be enough to warrant worrying about. You can always add stock/yogurt/coconut milk etc to water down. Nothing wrong with curry at all in fact slot of the spices r very good for you. Mine have always loved it!! :)

weegiemum · 01/03/2013 12:32

My dd1 spat curry out as a toddler and won't try (she's 13 so I'm hoping for some common sense soon!)

Ds wolfed down from about 7 months, but he's always been adventurous! A waiter in Italy brought him his own bowl (free!!) of deep-fried mini octopus as he kept nicking dh's. He was 8.5 months!!

Dd2 would eat curry/Chinese/Thai/sushi every day. For her 9th birthday she didn't o to school as she had a hospital appointment, so we took her out to an Indian tapas bar she loves. She ended getting free small plates, drinks and ice-cream as she was such a hit with the waiters!

It's probably more the case that her digestive system isn't used to the spices.

When DS1 was little, I used to make curries with no chilli in and they agreed with him just fine. He's never tolerated heat, though. I'm confident enough with spicing to work out my own combinations, but this Bill Grainger recipe for Chicken & spinach curry is very child friendly and oyu can control the amount of salt in it, if that worries you.

ouryve · 01/03/2013 13:15

And yy about enjoying it while it lasts.

DS1 has pretty strict rules about food which certainly don't allow curry. He won't even eat non-chilli any more (made with sweet paprika instead of chilli)

LeftLuggage · 01/03/2013 13:25

Thanks all, love the Waitrose and bill g recommendations too

Probably right about her system getting used to the spices, think there was a party in her tummy last night!

YANBU to give her curry, I'm sure it's done her no harm.

As an aside does anyone had any recipes they fancy sharing? I want to try DDs with curry but haven't been confident enough yet!

LeftLuggage · 01/03/2013 16:28

My one was this one, with addition of random extra spices and yogurt

Lovely and so easy!
