Disabled parking thread........ reporting ?

Getting very frustrated now - have to take Mum and dad to their local PO every time I'm over there and out of 4 recent visits the PO red van is in the bloody space. Mostly there is another space in the small car park to park in so I used that, but last time I did ask him to move (and he then parked up behind and blocked us in!)

Next time he's there I will take a photo and report it. I have mentioned in the shop already.

AIBU? and if not who to report to? the PO clearly don't care (it's a counter ina londis type shop).

If it's a Post Office van collecting dropping off items at the Post Office, where do you want it to be parked?

Its a small car park in the middle of 3 sides of a square of shops. He could easily park in the large car park behind- as could we its not that far, but it's up and down a couple of kerbs/along a poorly maintained pavement etc which means it's challenging for mum (and a nightmare for the 2 of them as dad will charge ahead and find something to trip over, like his own foot..) .

Remember managing an 18 month old who needs watching and a 3+yr old who charges off and falls over/does something daft? It's like that only they are 84 and 89.... and using a buggy or reins isn't an option!

I would report them - take the Reg. Number - I guess start at the local sorting office where they will have a supervisor and then take it from there if it still goes on.

I have a blue badge and this would really upset me - occasionally I have had to park in an ordinary space and then when I have arrived back at the car, couldn't open the door wide enough to get back in. Once I had to phone my DH to come to get the car out of the space so I could get in. Disabled spaces are there for a reason and it's not to make life easier for PO vans.

i would report it to the police maybe they could have a word as surely its a parking violation?

"Its a small car park in the middle of 3 sides of a square of shops"

If it's private land, only the landowner can do anything. The disabled bays have no legal status unless on the highway.

If it's a public road ring the police non-emergency number 101. They may or may not intervene. If the council have a private parking enforcement company they may ticket the van however Royal Mail have traditionally been granted a degree of freedom about parking because they were a statutory undertaker.

You are correct about the PO - a privately run post office franchise has no control over Royal Mail however they could email the PO area manager on your behalf.

However you also said (about where you suggest the van should park to collect mail sacks)...

"...it's up and down a couple of kerbs/along a poorly maintained pavement etc"...

which would mean the driver would have to struggle with heavy mail bags.

No easy answer I'm afraid unless you are complaining that the than is there all day rather than just collecting mail?

Moyerboat i would expect it to be parked in the carpark not a disabled space unless the driver has a blue badge

Pendeen · 01/03/2013 11:04

the van I mean!

chickensarmpit · 01/03/2013 11:09

Is the land public or private? I believe this matters, it does where i work anyway.
Our carpark shares spaces with the unloading bay.

I would have a word with the PO first and mention it to them, then take it from there.
