To think a 5 month old shouldn't sound like a seagull shouting through a megaphone?

My DD has spent the last 48 hours screaching in an earsplitting tone. Her normal cry has turned into a high pitched, full volume shout, and her "chatting" has gone from cute gargles to ear splitting painful screech's of the same pitch. I can't even hear other family members talking when she does it!

I work at a nursery but I have never heard anything vaguely like it.
Someone please tell me this is a normal short phase?!
Or should I just invest in some ear defenders/find her some seagull friends to chat to for the future Sad

Grin Fun isn't it. The title just made me laugh so hard I had to reply.
My second son did this, it used to hurt my ears. I got so many dirty looks when shopping like I had been pinching him to make him screech.
Eventually they grow out of it thank god!

ThinkAboutItOnBoxingDay · 27/02/2013 23:48

Yup normal. Dd didn't do it but many of her peers did.

What a delightful new sound they discover. Start prepping that fake 'oh how lovely' smile now, reckon it won't be the last time it's used!

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/02/2013 00:57

You need friends whose children also do it. DD has a girl and boy friend both of whom screech, do zombie impression "BBBLLEEUUGH" in an Exorcist voice and roar at the top of their lungs. It's not relaxing but at least we are all in the same boat.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 28/02/2013 01:00

DD2 is only 15 weeks and she does a screech squeal thing thats so loud.

DP says shes like a velociraptor from Jurassic Park. I have never watched it so I dont know, but the screeching is shocking :o

ChairmanWow · 28/02/2013 03:49

DS used to do the zombie growl too and would then look incredibly pleased with himself. He made other babies cry on several occasions. Strange really because he's always been pretty laid back. I can't remember when it stopped but it did stop. We just used to ignore it as we didn't want to make it a thing by reacting.

robino · 28/02/2013 05:11

oh lord. All of my DDs have been hideously loud babies it's not changed now they're 6, 4 and 2. Have my sympathies, and pray that she doesn't develop a death wail like the one my DD2 emits whenever she slightly injures herself, convincing all around that her head is hanging merely by her vocal cords or some such hideous injury.

GailTheGoldfish · 28/02/2013 07:14

Buy some ear plugs, mine is 7mo and still doing it. I have been on the verge of knocking on my neighbours' door to beg them not to call SS several times.

BeaWheesht · 28/02/2013 07:26

I've just remembered ds did this. He's not much quieter now he's 6.

LifeSavedbyLego · 28/02/2013 08:30

Your title made me laugh. Ds2 did this, his particular party piece was to wait until it had been quiet in the car for a while on a long journey and then screech loud enough to make your ears bleed and eyeballs explode. He wasn't upset he just liked the noise.

How we never crashed, I'll never know.

MildDrPepperAddiction · 28/02/2013 08:43

Yup. My ds did this. We used to call him the little pterodactyl!

we had this small banshee phase too
now have a growling pirate phase here
all Fank -oo, Plearshe and 'Walk the PLANK' shouted in the supermarket
it doesnt get better

Fakebook · 28/02/2013 09:55

My DS has always screamed since he was a baby and found his voice. He's nearly 14 months now and still has a really high pitched shrill scream. He normally does it when he wants my attention or when he's getting frustrated in his pushchair. It sounds absolutely horrible. My ears ring and go out of tune when he does it. I had hoped it would be a phase but he does it everyday. On Tuesday he did it at checkout in Tesco and the cashier jumped up and then gave him a horrible look. It's very embarrassing and I don't know how to control it because he just does it out of the blue.

I really hope that it's a phase with your baby, OP! Because weird baby noises/screams is very frustrating. (He just screamed in my ear again as I was writing this last sentence; horrible!)

Flobbadobs · 28/02/2013 09:58

DD2 goes from the high pitched squealing to a really low bass sound, it's too weird!
DD1 started with the high pitched thing as a baby and 7 years on only bats and dogs can hear her when she's over excited...

sparklekitty · 28/02/2013 11:21

OMG do you have a twin to my DD??? I actually had to leave a cafe the other day out of embarrassment. Its not unhappy shouting just a new noise but she had already managed to wake up one friends baby then screamed so loudly she scared my other friends baby (who was feeding) and made her cry! I said my sorries, left swiftly chanting to myself 'this too will pass'

peeriebear · 28/02/2013 11:26

Ds is nearly 6 months and in the last month has found his vocal cords. This means that at 4am when he wakes for a feed he doesn't have a quiet gurgle any more, he makes a sound like a dalek being pushed through a meat grinder. And when I put him in his high chair without feeding him immediately, he screeches like nails on a blackboard! It has ruled out the high chair as a convenient holding station for when I have to wash up.

Ozziegirly · 28/02/2013 11:52

L actually OL. My ds used to do this at about 5 months- bang his little fists and screech for no reason.

He isn't screamy now but he doesn't stop talking.
