To think this is a bit unfair of the school

My DD had an injury to her foot that has resulted (after some time actually) with the toe nail detaching as a healthy nail grows through. The problem is tht the old nail hasn't quite come off yet. When we went swimming the other day it softened up and was flapping around and really hurting DD. I took her to see the nurse but she wouldnt allow nurse to remove it and nurse in two minds so the decision to wait for it to come off. She is going to have swimming lessons with the school this term and she loves it but refuses to get her foot wet (some interesting bath times!) as it was so painful before.

Went to see her teacher fully expecting to be told to take DD into school after swimming but was told tht no, i would have to take her in at the normal time and she will have to sit in the other class (same year group).

Poor DD, so not only will she miss out on swimming but will have to go and sit in other class and feel like a bit of an interluder. or alternatively find the novelty quite enjoyable as she didn't seem to mind but I amd just dissappointed that i wont be albe to have some time with her on that morning

I accept that this is what needs to happen but just feel a bit :( about it.

When DS broke his arm, he had to sit and watch the rest of his class do PE. Personally think that was worse than going in the other class but never crossed my mind to expect anything else.

To be honest, I would probably find a way to trim it. If its flapping about, it shouldn't hurt when you cut it.

Does she enjoy swimming usually? Would explaining that she could go swimming but only if she allows the nurse to remove her nail otherwise she has to sit in the other class make her more likely to let nurse remove it? Also did you give her painkillers such as paracetamol before she went to have the nail removed. That might help to stop it being quite so painful as it's removed.

Can't understand why you can't just put a plaster round her toe until the nail removes itself. I have a toe similarly plastered myself at the moment.

You know, my DD1 is petrified of needles and has SN, so although she is 7 she has an emotional age more like 3. When she got an abcess on her foot, she still had to have the needle...

Just trim the nail and stick a plaster on.

Could you homeschool her until the end of swimming and then take her in.
