DP thinks that if you turn the thermostat on the central heating up (25+) the heating will get warm faster (from not being on).

I know this to be true, but he will not have it.

He also puts the oven on at 250º thinking it will reach 200º quicker (then not turning it down and burning everything)

Am I right????

I have a new gas cooker and
a)the manual tells you to turn it on to high for the first couple of minutes
b) the flame is definitely bigger at first (till the desired temp is reached?)

And I agree about the toaster getting hotter quicker on the second batch

NuggetofPurestGreen · 27/02/2013 19:37

Shutup because I hate "raw" toast ie light brown. Leave it in longer to get it nice and well cooked.

Corygal · 27/02/2013 19:45

What about a basic gas oven? I assumed the higher the knob setting, the higher the flame. Thus (note scifi terminology) it would heat at a faster rate if you set it to 9 than if you set it to 2.

Am I right? If I'm not, advice on how to change the autohabits of a lifetime would also be of assistance, if anyone is a behavioural scientist.

There are thermostats in most toasters, to prevent the "first slice perfect, second slice burnt" effect of cumulative heating of the elements too.

So in a value toaster you'll probably find your second batch burns. In your slightly more expensive toaster, the second batch just takes less time.

My flame in my gas oven adjusts by itself depending on the temperature in the oven. The flame for GM 6 is higher than the flame for GM 1, but the flame for GM 4 is the same as GM 8, it just turns down to low faster.

Ahem. I used to work in a basement. With product engineers.

They tested home electrical goods, including toasters, and there was a chart. A colour chart that they had to compare the slices of bread that came out of the toaster with. So slices put in on 1 had to come out matching the colour for No.1, and so on.

I don't really know what this adds to the conversation, but I like telling it.

SnotMeReally · 27/02/2013 20:58

for those that dont get the toaster thing - the numbers are not colder/hotter levels, just times - so you are leaving it in longer, which is why it cooks more - you are not turning the heat up so it gets more toasted in the same length of time

youllneedthisfish · 27/02/2013 23:01

can I also add (knowledge gleaned from another MN thread) that tosters to heat up and get going after a few goes - so that's why the second piece burns on the same setting.
