to think Celebrites can do what they want without being labelled as a "bad role model"?

Rhianna can get back together with Chris Brown.

Katie Price can get married for the third time.

Kristen Stewart can have an affair.

Abbey Clancy can be whatever size she wants.

I'm not saying any of these examples are good or wise choices but it's up to everyone how they decide to live their own life and live with their own decisions/choices.

Why are people always saying they should set a good example and be a role model for young girls - just because they are famous?

aibu to think it's you who should be a good role model for your own child and set a good example for them?

You're not unreasonable for wanting it to be that way, but you are unrealistic if you think that's how it is. The media and celebrity culture has an ever increasing influence on the next generation... To convince yourself it is any other way is futile.

Remotecontrolduck · 26/02/2013 00:50

I do agree actually, unless they market themselves directly at children then they should be free to do whatever. Rhianna might have a lot of young fans but does she actually market herself at kids? (maybe she does, I don't really follow her). It's up to parents to instil right and wrong, not the job of celebs to moderate themselves because kids might be watching.

BegoniaBampot · 26/02/2013 00:52

YABU - not everyone buys into all this crap or believes it.

BOF · 26/02/2013 01:03

Nyyyaah, I dunno.

I think that if their marketing strategy and fan base is young (and Katie Price, for example, 'writes' children's books), then they do have a responsibility.

Footballers, as an example, only get paid so much because they add to their club's brand, and help sell kits and all sorts of crap to the kids who adore them. Should they then participate in sleazy rapey scenarios? No. Not just because it's wrong, but because they bring the club into disrepute. Firefighters and police officers risk losing their jobs if they behave like that in their personal lives, because their effectiveness depends on public trust. I don't see that it's all that different to say that the massive financial rewards of a public stage which relies heavily on the adulation of children and teenagers should not be exempt from the same yardstick.

YANBU. Becoming a popular singer or actor shouldn't mean you suddenly have to live a 12 rated life, simply because young people like you.

This really bothered me when I was a teen and was one of these "young girls" - I felt like it was implied that I was too stupid to enjoy music or be a fan of a celebrity without needing to emulate them completely. Young girls can't possibly have thoughts of their own!

scarletforya · 26/02/2013 10:36

YANBU

I hate that some people think that everyone in the public eye has to present a certain image, supposedly embodying everything parents aspire to for their kids.

It just leaves us with a load of homogenised, plastic celebs shiting on about body image or whatever the current pet ishoo of the day is.

adeucalione · 26/02/2013 10:52

Do people say that then? About all celebrities or just those that market themselves at children?

I don't think that everyone in the public eye should set a good example to children/teens but I do tend to encourage my children to have an interest in those celebrities that do.

For example - I was happy when DD read Jess Ennis's autobiography but regularly mock Katie Price.

SneakyNinja · 26/02/2013 12:33

Meh, I'm sure many of them positively thrive on any publicity.

rainbow2000 · 26/02/2013 13:39

I agree actually its up to you to instill values, nobody else.So what if Rihanna gets back with Chris Brown, nobody elses business.

As if you are to live a sterile life because you have young fans.
