to have a hysterectomy due to PMT moods?

My mum, who is difficult at the best of times, had a hysterectomy due to fibroids, she said she "had a real reason" to have one and I don't.
My moods are badly effected. Hence why I am single, hence why my DS has gone to live with his dad, hence why I feel at worst suicidal, at best tearful.
I was sterilized at csection with DC2 so havent got that reason not to go ahead.
AIBU? Or extreme? Or do you agree that my life is as much effected as anyone with a physical condition and should be taken seriously? With serious measures to treat it?

YANBU. I had hysterectomy 3 years ago for the same reason, best thing I ever did, my mood is so much more stable and it's made me realise even more what hell it was before. Go for it! Had a bit of trouble at first finding a surgeon who would do the op for that reason though. Also, don't know how old you are, but you do need to weigh up future effect on bone density etc. Good luck Smile

I'm 33. Gynae is going to give me Zoladex first to see if it helps. Did u have this? What side effects did u get from the hysterectomy?

Yes, I had Zoladex for 2 years. I didn't have any really awful side effects from the hysterectomy, but of course it will put you into early menopause, and I had hot flushes for a while. I also have lost some bone density, so now take calcium and a bisphosphonate drug to help prevent osteoporosis later on. It's been worth it for me but I'm 10 years older than you and that's obviously a factor too.

Thankyou, that's good to know. All I can find on internet are horror stories.

Is it hysterectomy that you need, or oophorectomy?

I wondered that scaveola. Just removing your uterus wouldn't affect your hormones. They are made in your ovaries.
I suppose since you've been sterilized you may be taken seriously, not sure how easy it would be to source a surgeon to do the job though.

Have you tried mood stabilizing drugs at all? Sometimes SSRI's are helpful with PMT.

Having said that, though, I take a high dose of sertraline for anxiety and depression, but it's really ineffective when it comes to PMT. I'm currently waiting for a review to switch to something with a longer half-life to see if it helps.

Yes I've tried citalopram and mirtazipine, side effects were pretty bad and didn't help. I've tried all the usually supplements too.
I'm happy with my decision, providing the Zoladex shows good results. Concerned about the side effects of menopause though.
