We're all agreed it's crap so why keep creating traffic for its website?

OP posts:
Ragwort · 24/02/2013 10:01

I got to the age of 45 without even looking at the Daily Mail, thanks to Mumsnet I know seem to check it out every day Blush - although I wouldn't link articles to it Grin.

RedwingOnFire · 24/02/2013 10:03

It would be nice to believe that rather than people looking at it because they want to then taking on board its woman hating messages.

Pagwatch · 24/02/2013 10:05

I actually don't even care if they do that.
They can read it, buy it, cut and paste the whole fucking thing from immigrant scandals to Kim Kardashians arse crack.
But please, for the love of God, can they stop the faux apologies and the pretence that someone opened the article and forced the to read it against their will.
The phrase 'sorry - daily mail alert' makes me irrationally irritated.

Just admit you read the bloody thing. No one believes you happened to glance at it over your MILs shoulder.

HollyBerryBush · 24/02/2013 10:07

Newspaper snobbery at its n#bnest!

And what do the MN regulars suggest we all read?

CuttedUpPear · 24/02/2013 10:09

The Guardian. Go on, try it.

HollyBerryBush · 24/02/2013 10:13

Guardian? Too left wing for my liking.

mrsstewpot · 24/02/2013 10:16

Read whatever you want, but don't post and link on MN (or any forum) if you are apparently embarrassed, disgusted and apologetic for it!

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 24/02/2013 10:17

It's not snobbery.
I have said oodles of times before that I read it sometimes.
I just don't get why people get all

'omg this is the worst thing I have ever read and I only saw it because a huge gust of wind blew an open paper into my face so of course I thought I should start a thread and link it so that you can all share my outrage without having to rely upon random weather events...'

But I like that you only want comments from mumsnet regulars. It's nice, if a little rude to any passing poster that doesn't fit your criteria.

RedwingOnFire · 24/02/2013 10:20

Guardian left wing?! I'm left wing! Guardian is more centre liberal. However, it is much better if you want actual journalism rather than knee jerk faked facts hate mongering!

I prefer the Independent if I want sensible news in depth; the DM is great for a quick scan to see whats going on in the world - then you pop off somewhere without any bias.

The simple reason the DM is successful is it's layout. It also does brilliant book reviews.

Theicingontop · 24/02/2013 10:22

Personally I don't understand why people apologise. You don't have to be a genius to read the link you're about to click (unless they've named it) and realise it's a daily mail link. If you're morally opposed to giving them traffic, don't click it. What's with all the warnings and apologies. Irritating.

mrsstewpot · 24/02/2013 10:24

I see what you mean kim and understand your pov re challenging those attitudes but are we not playing right into their hands?

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 24/02/2013 10:34

The Mail Online get 3 billion pounds every time we click a link. Fact Wink

usualsuspect · 24/02/2013 10:39

Maybe they didn't read the MN rulebook?

DreamsTurnToGoldDust · 24/02/2013 10:39

I thought people apologised about linking to the DM because if they didnt then inevitably one of the first couple of posters will have a go for not saying it was a DM link and they refuse to open them.

DolomitesDonkey · 24/02/2013 10:41

YANBU it cracks me up! especially the ones who post at 6am as though the first thing they did when they woke up was check! Grin

Mind you, I love the daily mail and don't give a shit although would prefer a few less animal abuse stories.

Pagwatch · 24/02/2013 10:42

Why would anyone not read the rule book? Shock

Yes. They apologise because people will say 'it's from the mail so it's crap'.
But that doesn't really explain why they are sharing a link from a paper they feign loathing and so wouldn't come across unless they actually read it..

germyrabbit · 24/02/2013 10:43

fgs what a mean spririted thread. lets just talk about really serious news topics from the Times then

though saying that whenevever i actually post serious topics only a handfull of people respond usually so have given up

RedwingOnFire · 24/02/2013 10:43

Why does it's layout make is successful?!

I dont even click on the links when I post on a DM thread, I post in ignorance Shock

usualsuspect · 24/02/2013 10:44

I thought the MN rules stated you had to apologise for DM links.

I never click them though, so I'm happy for people to state in their OP the link is from the DM.

germyrabbit · 24/02/2013 10:45

its more interesting than mn these days

come on then op start an interesting thread yourself......

mrsstewpot · 24/02/2013 10:48

I'm referring to those who deliberately go looking for MN thread material - not intending to be mean or a newspaper snob. Well maybe the latter a little bit!

OP posts:
Startail · 24/02/2013 10:49

I loath the women hating, diet obsessed, soft porn DM web site, but I refuse to pay for the Times.

I used to read their web site every day, now it's the BBC and you lot.

Pagwatch · 24/02/2013 10:50

Sorry Usual.
I was confusing the MN rulebook with my personal rule book Grin

I don't think it's mean spirited is it. Isn't it akin to a 'Christ, Peter Andre is really orange and annoying. Why do people watch his programmes?'
