To think smokers should not smoke next to a no smoking sign?

(My first aibu - am bracing myself) Grin

Today, I was parked outside a hospital waiting for my parents to come out. Right outside the entrance of the hospital and for about 50 metres, there are numerous signs (I counted eight from where I could see) signs saying "please do not smoke here" and "no smoking". I was waiting for about ten minutes, and I saw lots of people (15) smoking around the whole no smoking zone inc. several people (6) actually smoking next to a no smoking sign. I was partly amused by the irony of it but I also thought there must be a reason why it's a no smoking area, so why are they smoking there? Why could they not walk a little way and smoke where there were no signs? Just to let you know, the whole entrance area inc. way beyond the signs is sheltered and it was not even snowing nor raining.

Whatever, "Most people hate it - really? , most people "hate" whatever is currently doing the rounds. Most people didn't hate smoking 50 years ago."

I people hate smoking, I always have done, even when I was a child and I didn't know my mums smoking could kill us both.

My uncle died of lung cancer a few years ago from smoking. When he was diagnosed the doctors told him not to bother giving up, no point, it's too late. He might have been one of the people with drips or in wheelchairs outside smoking.

Kendodd · 27/02/2013 10:01

Sorry, that should read, I hate people smoking. Oh and mum's

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 27/02/2013 10:07

Ferret, your anecdote illustrates the point I made earlier perfectly. Thank you. Bring back the smoking areas and let them puff away if they wish. Just do it away from everyone else.

Kendodd · 27/02/2013 10:13

Oh, and I think if they are going to up 'no smoking' signs up everywhere to ban smoking they should make sure they enforce it.

Kendodd · 27/02/2013 10:20

*"Why should they obey it sparkling? I can put a notice like that up in my garden
but I don't have the legal powers to enforce it and neither does the hospital." *

Can they really not enforce it? Can't they just evict ask you to leave the premises? Hospitals are private property after all.

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2013 10:45

it just makes me sad that smokers can't obey a polite sign. Sad But no it has to be legally enforcable. I know my rights etc etc etc

Kendodd · 27/02/2013 11:49

I wonder if the reworded the signs 'please do not smoke, adults and children with breathing difficulties need to use the entrance'?

atthewelles · 27/02/2013 11:52

I agree Sparkling. That attitude from some smokers always annoys me. As long as its legal it doesn't matter if its inconsiderate or rude. Like those people who stand in a crowded bus shelter on a wet day and puff smoke all over everyone because 'there's no law against it'. Angry

Exactly atthe. So when DS asks next time we have to go to hospital with yet another footballing injury i can explain exactly why they smoke outside A&E.

Mrsdavidcaruso · 27/02/2013 14:30

Actually atthewelles it IS illegal to smoke in a bus shelter as its 3/4 covered. The same as if a hospital entrance is covered its illegal to smoke there - read the anti smoking legislation please before making comments it's very clear. However I do not have to OBEY a sign polite or otherwise that tells me I cannot smoke outdoors in an area where people are not obliged to walk past me or through my smoke.

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2013 16:56

I think you have made it clear that you aren't going to obey any polite notices Mrsdavid. But we are talking hospital entrances where people will walk past you through your smoke.

Our bus shelters have a roof that's all.

Kendodd · 27/02/2013 17:13

"However I do not have to OBEY a sign polite or otherwise that tells me I cannot smoke outdoors"

Why not? Why wouldn't you be willing to respect it?

DoYouMrJones · 27/02/2013 18:16

YANBU. Smokers are selfish individuals. IMO cigarettes should be doubled in price at the very least, let's make them as difficult to get as possible. There should be heavier penalties for those who litter their cigarette butts. Hope to see a day when it's banned in public altogether.

Mrsdavidcaruso · 27/02/2013 18:19

But Sparkling As I have said many times they don't walk through MY smoke as I don't smoke in the entrances

Mrsdavidcaruso · 27/02/2013 18:22

Because Ken until smoking becomes outlawed in public places any sign that tells me I cant smoke in a public place is not a legal notice ad as long as I use my own sense of fairplay and I don't smoke near other people then these notices don't mean anything to me and I shall ignore them - thats

Mrsdavidcaruso · 27/02/2013 18:23

the way I feel - sorry - BTW I have actually had a go myself at people who smoke in doorways or illegal areas and I am a smoker

crashdoll · 28/02/2013 08:03

I don't smoke but I think what you said is fair enough.

crashdoll · 28/02/2013 08:03

Posted too soon...

Especially as you said you don't smoke in doorways etc.

honeytea · 28/02/2013 08:27

I think they should get the local scout groups to go to the hospital with water guns and squirt the selfish smokers flouting the rules. Much more fun than packing shopping bags!

limitedperiodonly · 28/02/2013 10:33

Doesn't bother me and I've never smoked.

I was in for five weeks last year. On the few occasions I went in and out of the building I used to pass the smokers in seconds.

At least they weren't smoking on the ward balcony which is what they did last time I was in 20 years ago.
