to think Barbie dolls in party bag is a bit OTT?

My 6yr old DD went to a party today and came home with a proper 12" Barbie as her party bag gift.

Is this over the top?

It's my DD party tomorrow and the girls are getting a small craft kit and chocolate figure each, total cost per girl less than £1.50. Barbie dolls cost AT LEAST £10 each - for 12 girls, that's an absolute fortune!

AIBU or just stingy?

To make matters "worse" the DC who hosted the party today is also invited tomorrow.

Shock

YANBU. Did she win it maybe?

AgentZigzag · 23/02/2013 20:22

Some people just like showing off.

Don't give it a second thought Smile

KenDoddsDadsDog · 23/02/2013 20:23

it could be that they got them cheaply , someone knows someone etc. Seems a lot for a party bag.

Babyblade · 23/02/2013 20:24

I thought it might have been a prize but Barbie doll boxes were sticking out of other party bags that I saw being taken home.

You can get them way cheaper than that if you get them in lidl or special offer in Argos. She probably bought them cheap ages ago and saved them for the party.

It's a lovely idea, and probably more worthwhile than tatty junk that gets broken within 5 mins of going home.

WildRumpus · 23/02/2013 20:25

I bought my DD a Barbie for £3 in Tesco a few months ago. But YANBU - it is an excessively lavish gift for a party bag.

podgymumma · 23/02/2013 20:25

Asda do some Barbies for £2.97. Were they just the plain ones?

Pickles101 · 23/02/2013 20:25

YANBU - bit OTT. DSS's party bags will be containing pretty much fuck all. But I love giving Barbie dolls makeovers destroying them so I wouldn't be complaining Grin

glamourousgranny42 · 23/02/2013 20:25

YANBU! Barbie was banned in our house when my dd was little. The improbable aspirational plastic woman was not welcome at all. Never mind the price! Says more about the mum than anything else I reckon

OhCobblers · 23/02/2013 20:25

She might have got them in a sale? I saw some last year in a supermarket sale for £3!

onedev · 23/02/2013 20:26

That's OTT - your party bags will be great. I wouldn't give it a second thought Grin

kelda · 23/02/2013 20:26

She probably just got them all really cheap.

CloudsAndTrees · 23/02/2013 20:26

YANBU to think its a generous party bag gift, but the host was happy to give them so just be pleased that your dd got something nice.

The host may well have got them cheaper than retail price.

ThePinkOcelot · 23/02/2013 20:26

What else was in the bag?

Babyblade · 23/02/2013 20:27

I've done very quick search on flea-bay and Amazon and not seen any cheap bundles - another ideas

Maybe they were on sale somewhere. Maybe the amount they cost isn't too much in relation to the parents' income. Maybe the parents just like to show off.

Who knows?

Just you enjoy your own child's party and don't worry what other parents do. You provide what you can afford, anything else doesn't matter.

I'm sure your daughter will be delighted with her party.

givemeaclue · 23/02/2013 20:27

They are £3 in asda

coldcupoftea · 23/02/2013 20:27

YANBU, however I did get DD a barbie for christmas from sainsburys for a fiver, so it's possible she saw them cheap somewhere and stocked up. Although a fiver is still a lot for a party bag!

Guadalupe · 23/02/2013 20:28

They might have got them cheap?

I thought our party bags might look over the top and I found myself explaining them but when I got to the checkout in Toyrus with my balloons and wrapping paper, he said, do you want any Wenlock soft toys for 1p?

Ooh I said... Have you got 16?

Babyblade · 23/02/2013 20:29

Sorry - hit "post" too soon.

Just had a look at Argos and 3 doll pack is £12.99.

Perhaps she has lots of nectar points ...

My DD once came home with a 10 pound gift card for Claires Accessories.

She'd already been taken to the Build a Bear place and a pizza!

I was Shock My party bags tend to be one little gift and a shit load of Haribo.

Parent's don't like that but kids do and it's cheap!

notactuallyme · 23/02/2013 20:30

God, just be pleased yor kid got something decent and stop looking to be snide. Can't stand this sniping at people. 'Showing off' - wtf? I love parties, I like my kids' friends, I prefer doing a decent party bag gift. Great. Now I know half of the recipients think I'm up myself.

AgentZigzag · 23/02/2013 20:32

It's not really about how much they got them for, it's that they want people to think they've gone one better than the normal pocket money toys people usually put in.

Although they're probably really lovely people and just wanted to give the DC a treat Grin

Babyblade · 23/02/2013 20:33

Seems like she's a clever shopper! :)

I think my aim with the our party bags was not to provide more endless plastic tat. Barbie's aren't tat, although not everyone's cup of tea, I was just a bit stunned.

AgentZigzag · 23/02/2013 20:34

You're probably right notactually, I just don't like other people Grin
