WIBU to eat the damn kievs?

Right, so I was hungry tonight and while foraging in the fridge for wild berrys and such, I found some chicken kievs. (For those of you uninitiated in the awesomeness of kievs it's like chicken stuffed with garlic or ham and cheese or something) Anyway the useby date was two days ago. I was tired. I was hungry. There was nothing else. I opened the packet, smelled fine, all clear so far. Cut open chicken, no horrifying mold monsters jumped out, clear on this front too. So I ate them. When they were two days out of date. That's not too bad right? RIGHT? I started worrying about it conveniately AFTER consumption, seeing as that's how my brain gets its kicks apparently. DH has started laughing when I told him and lovingly told me I was "screwed" and "enjoy spending the night on the toilet." It's not going to be that bad right? I REALLY wanted those kievs and I'm thinking, maybe the sheer force of my desire for them will combat their possible food poisenness? Would you have eaten them? How long after use by date is still deemed safe?

If they looked and smelt ok I'd have eaten them, in fact I think I did exactly that few months ago. I'm fine.

notapizzaeater · 23/02/2013 18:48

If they looked ok, smelt ok then they will be fine ! Food doesn't magically go off on the stroke of midnight on the sell by date - I would have enjoyed them too ...

MrsMangoBiscuit · 23/02/2013 18:48

I was eating yoghurt a month ago that was dated just before christmas! Dates are guidelines if you're confident in telling when food is off or starting to turn. I'd have eaten them too.

ScarletLady02 · 23/02/2013 18:50

I think as long as meat smells and looks ok, and it's cooked through properly, you'll be fine. You can usually tell if meat is off!

I bought some cheese ON the sell by date and was still eating it a week later....it was fine.

It might not even be chicken anyway, so don't worry Grin

I'd have eaten them - I consider anything in the last few days after the "date" to be fair game as long as they smell all right. I've just had an apple that went out of date in October - tasted great - there was a bag of apples that have been under the seat in the car since we went away in the october and OH only just found them.

Pandemoniaa · 23/02/2013 18:53

I'd work on the basis that Chicken Kievs cannot read a calendar.

Also, since nobody is likely to have told them that their time was up 48 hours ago, they won't have realised that they are now supposed to have turned into putrefying bundles of toxicity and thus both they (and you) will be fine.

KindleMum · 23/02/2013 19:00

I'd have eaten them. I think you can generally tell if stuff has started to turn. I am extra careful about cooking out of date things so that they're piping hot and have had all the required cooking time though. And I don't give it to guests!

I'll eat yoghurts as long as they don't smell and the lid isn't swelling. Cheese as long as I can't see mould.

ScarletLady02 · 23/02/2013 19:05

Mould on cheese is fine (think about stilton), just cut it off Grin

GregBishopsBottomBitch · 23/02/2013 19:06

If it smells and looks fine, then its fine to eat.

daddyorchipsdaddyorchips · 23/02/2013 19:12

You were only unreasonable if you cut open the chicken before you cooked them. I hate it when the garlic butter escapes!

I would have eaten them, I love kievs...
