For a single person on £71 a week having to pay a percentage of council tax. Already has to pay £5 every two weeks to travel to next town to sign on as closed job centre in her town.
Council have admitted they are taking money from them but not disabled and those with chidren under 5. Fair enough these groups should be protected but those groups receive a much greater level of benefits to start with.
I am not referring to a workshy person who has never worked. This person worked since school for same company before another firm took over and closed factory. Has worked when she can since but redundancy payments long gone.
Also lives in flat so unable to dry clothes cheaply.
AIBU to think this is unfair.

Yes, it is unfair. Increasing taxes for the very poorest is ridiculous, particularly given the increased administration costs it will create. Don't give in to the government spin that tries to make you hate people on different benefits though.

Attendance allowance is different, because it's for people over 65.

People with DLA get money for care, but are not compelled to pay for care if they don't feel they need it. If they can't cook, for example, they may have to pay for ready meals.

Lives in a flat so unable to dry clothes cheaply?

Hold on a sec, she could just use a clothes horse and put it in a room with the window slightly open, like I do. I live in a flat and don't own a tumble dryer.

How much a week will she have left for food once bills (including council tax) are covered?

Newcastle - in MY town, they ARE making the disabled pay.

AND the ones with children under 5.

AND the ones with disabled children.

I fit all 3 categories.

I'm STILL going to have to pay some of my Council Tax as of April.

And?

I'd rather they did that and continued to pay JSA/ESA/IS/DLA tbh.

£4 a week isn't huge.

Darkesteyes · 23/02/2013 20:56

Bloody hell Couthy how are they going to pay it.

CloudsAndTrees · 23/02/2013 21:17

YABU. Everyone should pay council tax. Council services are essential to everyone, so everyone should pay for them.

Darkesteyes · 23/02/2013 21:41

Its the poll tax by the back door.
