to not be sure if my brother has given me a compliment

I am56. My brother is 3 years older. In my lifetime he has given me 3 identifiable compliments. When I was about 20 and going out with a rightarsehole ( I didn't realise it then, hindsight,20-20 vision) my brother told me I could get a nicer boyfriend as I wasn't that ugly.

On my wedding day, he told me I looked nice.
When I was about 30 he tpld me he thought I lolked smart.
Today he said my hair looked different.

Is this good? It is 27 years since he has remarked about my appearance. I cant help but think it's significant. Is different a good thing?
I need confirmation here. I am very worried. I may look stupid.

Why are you relying on a 59 year old man who's never been nice to you for compliments.

How well do you get on with him?

LightbulbSoup · 23/02/2013 13:15

If he's like this with everyone else then fair enough. He could just be someone who doesn't give out compliments.

Next time he says something like 'you look nice' just reply 'I know, thank you.'

I can tell your hair looks lovely Smile

OP I'm assuming this is tongue in cheek... My brother has never paid me any compliment. He was always the good looking fashionable one even though he looked a prat in Miami Vice style pastel suits and no socks, always the one who what things look like is a great deal, no g/f over a size 8. I think he thinks of me as the frumpy older sister he has a point.

If he paid me a compliment I would be worried he was ill, or after something Grin

Who cares?

Some people don't compliment. Stop counting them. Its creepy. He doesn't owe you compliments. Get self esteem elsewhere

mrsbunnylove · 23/02/2013 16:05

i don't think my brother has ever given me a compliment. nor i him. he's erm.. 50.

ChairmanWow · 23/02/2013 16:09

oldraver I could have written that. My bro has always been way cooler then me, gorgeous girlfriends etc. I think he'd struggle to find what to compliment to be honest Grin.

Yes, it reads as tongue in cheek. Different is good I reckon. Who wants to be samey?

HecateWhoopass · 23/02/2013 16:41

I really don't think brothers tend to shower their sisters with comments about how beautiful they are.

I wouldn't worry about it.

HecateWhoopass · 23/02/2013 16:42

pressed post too early

I wouldn't worry about it. Different will mean exactly that. It looks different. As in changed. Grin

Think it's normal, DD just announced her engagement and DS said "even you can do better than that". It's the nearest thing to a compliment he has given her.

DoJo · 24/02/2013 02:18

It depends - have you just changed your style from the style you had at the point of the last compliment? Seeing as we have that as a reference point for 'smart', we can assume that either your hair looks 'casual' or perhaps 'flippant' or similar, so you can extrapolate from that if you chart the progress of your hair since the last time he mentioned it.

Catchingmockingbirds · 24/02/2013 04:23

Not a compliment no, just stating a fact.
