to think I have been ripped off by this shop today?

Last week I went into a local shop which is part of a small chain of shops and saw a jacket I liked but they didnt have it in the size/colour combination I wanted. They were keen to "get one in for me" so I said yes and was a bit surprised to be asked to pay for it. When I was hesitant, they said it was ok, if I didnt want it when I tried it on when picking it up I could get my money back.

I called into pick it up today. I saw that all these jackets were now in the sale with 15% off. When I pointed this out they said oh yes, but not in this colour. I said I was surprised by this as had looked on the company website and had seen that my colour was actually last season's. I was assured they were continuing the colour into this season as it was "so popular".

I left with the jacket and I have just had a look on their website and guess what - my colour IS in the sale. I feel totally ripped off.

You are within your rights to get a full refund and not a credit note. Some shops say that will sale items you can only exchange/credit note but not on full priced items

The smart thing would have been to refund you the difference.

Shops do not have to give you a refund. Check the refund policy on the receipt. The online refund policy may differ to the store bought purchase.

Ask them what their returns policy is. Legally they don't have to give you a refund if you've changed your mind, but most do allow it. The fact that they said you could get your money back if you wanted makes me think they'll give you a refund no problem. I don't see why you would need all guns blazing.

I havent been back to the shop as checked the receipt and it says that they will refund any full priced (!) item if returned within 7 days unworn.

I will go in on Monday and get the full refund and not say a word. I'll definitely never pay upfront in a shop again like that. Lesson learned.

Thanks for all the advice. I didnt even realise returns policies were on receipts.

I would complain that it appears they were fully aware that this jacket would be in the sale by the time she collected it and the fact they blatantly lied to her by saying her particular colour would not be on sale as it is so popular!

Staff don't always know what's going I to sale until sale lists arrived. Certainly if something has been very popular (which I assume it was if there were none in stock) it's unlikely that it would be going into sale.

Staff are not obliged to inform customers what's going into sale and when. Otherwise they would stop trading in the days running up to a sale.

As a customer, you can pretty much guarantee that at some point, most items will be reduced. It's up to you to decide whether to buy it full price or wait until its reduced.

I agree on this occasion the op was unfortunate. But this isn't unusual, illegal or wrong. It's business.

I agree that the op could complain that she was told it wouldn't be going in the sale. But when she was told this, the assistant may not have known what was going in the sale. Maybe the assistant could have been a little more helpful with finding out whether it would be going in the sale-but that's it really.
