To think that animal should be helped?

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2183579/Welsh-Mountain-Zoo-Chimpanzee-asks-visitors-free-enclosure-heartbreaking-film.html

Someone told me today a story of an orang-utan or a chimpanzee kept as a pet in the US. People ho kept him had to move to a flat and took him to a primates sanctuary. After 5 years they came by to say hello and the animal signed 'please, help, out'.

I googled just now to see if I can find the story and this similar thing came up. Is there anything that can be done to make those primates happy? It might not be as straight forward as releasing them into the wild as they might be not used to but this is heartbreaking.

Releasing a animal like that into the wild would be an instant death sentence for it. It must be distressing for the animal to suddenly be treated like an animal rather than a pet though, and I do feel very sorry for it, but this is the reason why people should not be allowed to have them as pets in the first place.

Footface · 22/02/2013 16:19

Yes make it illegal to own such animals. It's selfish and disgusting

BlessedDespair · 22/02/2013 16:22

Sadly these animals are often not treated correctly while kept as pets you only have to watch documentaries on tv to see that people dress them up, feed them human food, they often never see others of their kind or get to display natural behaviour :( . They often take quite a while to integrate with others of their kind let alone learn to be who they are and not what we have forced them to be.

If its owners cared then they would never have bought one in the first place

Also, baby chimps are cute but adult chimps are really strong and can be violent. Remember the woman who had her face eaten?

Oh that's so sad!!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 22/02/2013 17:35

We, humans, are cunts. Sad

I think we are the only species capable od cruelty.

That's a silly statement. Chimps will go and intentionally murder the young from other tribes. Meercats do the same.

BabyMakesTheBellyGoRound · 22/02/2013 17:45

Personally I think humanification of animals is cruel. Animals have instincts and survival techniques in built and to train them out of that is cruel and leaves them vulnerable.
My MIL does this with her dog. She feeds him human food from a fork, dresses him up,allows him to dominate and dictate where people sit etc. If anything happened to MIL he would be in for an awful shock when treated like a dog.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 22/02/2013 17:47

No it isn't a silly statement. Violence and aggression obv happen in nature, however cruelty is something slightly different. It's causing prolonged suffering on purpose, sometimes just for one's amusement.

Primates do display emotions that humans also do. Those primates in my op were taught sign language and clever as they are, they used it to communicate their feelings. It's not humanising them, it's accepting they are similar to us.

I complete agree that treating animals like your mil does is wrong. Sorry, running to pick up child and on my phone so don't know exactly who I'm responding to.

OP posts:
BabyMakesTheBellyGoRound · 22/02/2013 18:07

Yes primates do display similar emotions but to keep them as a pet is cruel and wrong. Unlike domesticated dogs and cats they are primarily wild animals so to remove them from that environment is wrong.
*omitting of course sanctuaries which try to replicate their natural state and are there to save animals from destruction by humans.

BabyMakesTheBellyGoRound · 22/02/2013 18:08

If it had not been kept as a pet in the first place it would have no need to be there.

Loshad · 22/02/2013 18:19

DFAG, ever watched a cat play with a mouse. I always think we can be rather arrogant as humans, assuming we are the only species capable of cruelty, or compassion or (insert desired emotion).

Djwkin · 22/02/2013 18:48

For those who were upset by this story, be thankful it is a hoax. The chimp in question was hand reared, but had lived at the zoo from one month old, and hasn't learned sign language. She was playing round and round the garden, and it was deliberately misinterpreted.

theodorakisses · 22/02/2013 19:02

They sell baby baboons and chimps in the pet shops here, complete with nappies and frilly dresses. heartbreaking.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 22/02/2013 19:59

I certainly hope so Djw Smile.
