The first tiny bit where the Earth is seeded with DNA was the best bit, and perhaps, the last few seconds, where the Alien of good films is born, was OK. Everything in between was crap.

So glad I only paid a couple of quid to borrow the DVD, instead of paying through the nose for the cinema as dh and I had intended to do.

Ridley Scot, you should be ashamed. ASHAMED. I am very cross with you, and I shall think twice before I bother with another film from you.

Was dire. I particularly like it when the scientist discovers a new creature previously unknown to science and what does he do ? He pokes it. He fucking pokes it. Poor thing i dont blame it for killing him one bit.

Trills - yes its the SciFi that brings me out.

I used to read Asimov non stop when I was a teenager. I can bore for Britain on the parallels between Clasical Greek lierature and SciFi. I like thoughtful SciFi though not 'shotem up' Star Wars type stuff.

Now you can find me on MN cooking threads most days though.

The gorgeous Fassbender is brilliant in it - honestly a great performance. Theron (who I usually love) was ok, Elba didn't have enough to do and Rapace was pretty good. Acting wasn't the issue.

I didn't hate it at all, thought it was good silly fun, but I'm not a huge sci-fi fan and so maybe went in with different expectations?

Independence Day was a fabulous spoof! Very silly fun.

Prometheus wasn't. I don't care who was in it, the female lead was shit and brought down everyone else's performances. At every event I was thinking "but....." - scientists don't do that etc., run to the side you twat, and so on. Impossible to suspend disbelief. Bad make up on the old geezer, so I just wanted to scrub his face every time I saw him and tell him to stand up straight (reminded me of the vile Tom Cruse being badly old in something or other).

I don't care how good any of the actors usually are; in this, they weren't.

The problem is that in a film like Prometheus I don't actually care about what happens to the characters.

On the other hand, in 2001 Space Odyssey in that moment where you realise Hal 9000 (the malevolent computer) is actually 'lying' is where you are screaming at the astronauts to get the hell out of there. You care - a lot!

In Blade Runner I found myself with a massive lump in my throat when the evil replicant Roy (Rutger Hauer) fights Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) but saves him from falling and then gives an epic monologue about his life just before his life terminates.

" I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears...in rain. Time to die."

You want to shout 'Nooooo don't die, there is good in you, you have humanity. Then at the end of the film where you Rick and Rachel (Sean Young) driving together and you know that Deckard knows there is a possibility of goodness, love and humanity in everything and we all die in the end anyway.

YABU it is a very good sci fi film. Some slightly dodgy dialogue and some character inconsistency but the ideas and lead performaces (particularly Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender) were fantastic, imo. Can't wait to see the sequel.

Watched this last weekend and I agree with the OP. also, Oxford, your post about the whole c-section bit made me chuckle as I was thinking 'wtf?!' when she was running around and throwing herself about (especially having had a second one myself fairly recently and I could barely haul myself to the bathroom).

It was absolutely horrible, and made no sense whatsoever. Plot seemed like it was cobbled together as it went along. It stayed in my head for days. £40 quid wasted at Imax. I will never watch it again or the sequel.

enjoyed it though it had so much to live up to. loved the start, the visuals, fassbender but it did lose it a bit in the middle as though they weren't sure where to go. still looking forward to the sequal.

Clickityclackety, that's exactly what we thought. 2 or 3 script writers, each with a bit of a plot who never meet. Someone thinks "there's enough material here for a whole film" and thus the Child of Darkness is born.

Also, dh speculates that perhaps Mr Scott was given a huuuuge amount of money for the use of his name, but never actually went near it himself.
